Free POP3 Providers Supporting Non-standard SMTP Ports

Rather than bury this info in previous post of Eln Lou's thought I would give it, its own space. These are the three remaining free email services with a non-standard SMTP server that you can use when your ISP blocks standard SMTP port 25. I should say the three that I could find as I obviously didnt look at every last free email. Runbox.com still offers same but is no longer free although not a bad deal for what they offer if you want to pay.

CJ-One question. When you set anyone of these up with MS Outlook Express whenever you send out mail to folks the "from" or "reply from" is going to have either "xxx.SoftHome.net" or "xxx.mochamail.com" etc. It will not be coming from your original email client (in my case Yahoo)? I decided to use SoftHome, should I set it as my default in MS Outlook Express? Thanks!

CJ-One more question.

I noticed if I want to check mail from MS Outlook Express with SoftHome I sporadically get asked from my user ID and password and I get the following error message when MSOE tries to check mail from SoftHome:

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'SoftHome Server', Server: 'mail.SoftHome.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Login failed. Don't check email more than once every 10 minutes. You are at 23/hour, 5 this period. See  http://mail.SoftHome.net/help/auth_errs.html#frequency ', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Softhome is worst of the bunch (I never tried E-Omninet) and limits you to checking mail every 10 min. Also service can be up and down at odd times. Your email client is outlook express. Softhome and Yahoo are your email accounts. Setup Yahoo as your primary account in Outlook since it is one you will use most. When you set Yahoo up in Outlook, use Softhomes SMTP server as the SMTP server with non-standard port 25000. You will do same when setting up Softhome in Outlook. Remember your email client has to check for mail at Softhome before it can send any mail, Yahoo or Softhome, on Softhome SMTP server.

Its been a long time since I have used Outlook. On windows I use "The Bat" and on linux computer I use "K-mail" email client. When sending mail with an email client there should be no tag ad on end of your email unless you specify it that way. If you send via web mail there will be a tag ad with most free email accounts since you are using webmail smtp server. Hmm, using SMTP server of an email rather than ISP with email client, I cant remember for sure if there is a tag. You'll just have to experiment.

MochaMail was very good when I used it. Runbox was also until it became too popular. They did bunch of upgrades and I guess now have to charge. You might try E-Omnimail. Post what your experience is with it if you try it. I shouldnt bad mouth Softhome, just I set a friend up with it and it went down for a week with no notice and was in general just qwirky. He changed to a local pay isp so kept Softhome to avoid changing email address, but changed SMTP server to one provided by his pay isp. No more problems.

I signed up for  http://eo.yifan.net/  yesterday and I have not had any problems with the few test e-mails I have sent and received. I wanted another service that uses a non-standard SMTP server in case  http://www.softhome.net/  or  http://www.mochamail.com/  would ever fail. You have to request a link for the signup by e-mail, but once received, the signup is painless!

For months I have not been able to get Mochamail to work right with Outlook Express. My Softhome and Yifan accounts work well. So , today I read an old copy of a Dunning Fools July 8 Mail and News posts and noticed that Mochamail has two smtp address settings. For port 25 the smtp address is "mail.mochamail.com' and for port 2525(not blocked) it is "smtp.mochamail.com". All this time I had tried to use "mail.mochamaim.com" with port 2525. One small correction and it is working well also. All three of these pop3 e-mail servers are good. Get all 3 when you can.
