Comcast is telling a friend of mine that he needs to switch his cable modem to a Docsis modem, otherwise he would not be using all the features that are available to him. His old modem is working fine, but he would like to know if there is any meaningful value with switching to a docsis modem (would cost him $89).

Please advise.

Thanks.

If I am never going to go over 15 mbps download speed, do I need DOCSIS 3.0 modem?

Just to clarify, last August it was your friend with the modem question, now it's you wondering if you need to switch?

What does this Docsis modem do above and beyond the 15 mbps you mentioned?

Hi Frapper!

This time I have the question phrased right! I did not know that DOCSIS had different versions, as I never had to worry about this myself.

What I am trying to learn is if I get a DOCSIS 2.0 modem and do not need download speed greater than 15 mpbs, is there any disadvantage versus using DOCSIS 3.0 besides the speed limitation?

No you dont have to buddy!

DOSSIS 2.0 will continue to work fine, dont listen to thier BS!!

If you wanted THIER TOP SPEED then yes you would have to goto 3.0

Does anyone know what the limits are for DOSSIS 1.0 and 2.0? (I think 2.0 is 10 Megs isnt it?)

Merci Plodr Smile

Looks like 1.x and 2.0 basically are the same (According to the chart)

42.88 (38) Mbit/s 55.62 (50)

55 Megs down?? (Im not sure how to read the chart)

Thanks everyone!

The only difference (besides the speed limits) I see is the number of channels that each version supports. Is there any disadvantage with having only one channel supported (in version 2.0) versus four (version 3.0)?
