|
|
Yesterday I got and installed Puppy Lucid and Puppy Quirky. Both are good. Then had to configure Puppy Lucid, used it more as I liked it more. I had to take the risk of installing Grub the bootlader to the Master Boot Record as it will not work from the Linux partition directly.
Also, calibre just hung when trying to get news. I had this on for 6 hours(I went to sleep during this time). There is some more left to do. Inspite of my familiarity with Linux and puppy, I still had to put in soo much energy/efforts into getting this install. I am feeling weak now.
Good thing is Puppy Quirky supports wine and Debian Packages via Ubuntu I think. Will wait and see, time will tell.
I wish to try to remaster Puppy next. _________________

I started with puppy quirky myself about a year ago, but short time after update to lucid it crashed on me and wouldn't boot. As a linux newbie - repairing it was over my head. Later I installed ubuntu 9.10 and it made my linux transition from windows very smooth. I installed it on external USB HDD. I've been using it with Gnome since.
Few days ago after update to 11.10 i installed XFCE since i just can't stand unity and i couldn't update gnome to v3 (v2 is not as configurable and notifications are buggy). XFCE so far looks very decent as windows manager. _________________ cheap dial-up isp's in USA

I have found Linux Mint to be a pretty well rounded OS. It uses Debian and Ubuntu technology.

Thanks Vijay. It's good to be back.
I've been eying Mint ever since i found out that Ubuntu is going Unity route. I was intrigued at first about unity, but after trying it back in the spring and few days ago again the interface is just not clicking with me. Besides my laptop is over 6 years old and barely meets minimum requirements for unity. _________________ cheap dial-up isp's in USA

Have a look at pinguy too
http://pinguyos.com/
It includes all the things to let multimedia just work. I'm one that likes out of the box working distro. I do not want to have to decide what I need to install for things to work.
I'm not sure how it will operate on a 6 year old laptop, though.
I tried it live on a 6 year old desktop and it worked fine but laptops with the video normally presented challenges for me. |

This is a tested list and review of laptops and how they performed with various distros. It doesn't mean these are the only ones, just tested with various laptops.
