|
|
I'm using my free backup internet, because my All2Easy Shortcut disappeared from my desktop!
I also checked my Internet Options - Connections - to confirm that All2Easy is still listed there as the default. Yes - it's still listed - so how the heck did my dialup shortcut disappear?
I'd appreciate if someone could advise - thanks! |

The question is do you want to create another All2Easy desktop shortcut?
A shortcut will disappear if you do something out of the ordinary but no one can tell you for sure - only you know what you did. |

Thanks - All2ez finally had gotten back to this 8-) perpetual-newb & told me the same. I may have deleted it when I was deleting a set of multiple pics on my desktop.
I'm wondering if I should have dialup altogether due to its extreme slowness - but cable is six times as expensive. Why is only national health coverage in the news? Why not nationalize affordable access to high-speed internet? |

Why not nationalize affordable access to high-speed internet? | I continue to have dial-up myself for mainly the same reason. I've been using Poetworld since February 2002, which has provided excellent service.
As for the topics of the daily news, try writing a letter to the editor of a newspaper or call an "open phones" talk show. It probably won't garner the interest of health care, but at least others will know it's an issue to some.
(Please note that if anyone wants to continue the news topic, let's take it over to the General Forum.) _________________ Poetworld subscriber 2002-2012.

| I use Verizon DSL for $14.99 + NO taxes or fees. With DSL, you can watch videos and use VOIP. I use dial-up as a back-up. DSL is worth the extra $10 over the $4.95 (All2Easy). |

Note that OG1's option from Verizon is NOT available at all locations.
He is in NJ. I'm in PA and do not have an offer like his available here.
bruce bailey, as a point of reference, how long did it take you to download August's updates for XP? Do you do one at a time?
For my friends on dialup, I brought their computer here, hooked it up to my cable and updated everything from February through August. They run windows 2000 and there were over 28MB of updates just for windows (this covered several months). I have everything set for manual because they have Juno paid dialup and between the ads, downloading would be very slow and tie up their phone line for hours. (I'd move them away from Juno but they are in their late 70's, have always had Juno email and I'm not going to push them to learn something new). |

| Yes, I forgot - DSL or cable is necessary just to keep your PC updated (unless you download onto a USB drive at work) and to download ALL the FREE software available on the web. If you know where to look, you do not need to buy any more software - just download it off the web. |

| It downloads a bit every few days. I don't understand why it says downloading 0% for 4 hours! |

Perhaps the server timed out? I've had this happen to me on broadband.
OG1, unfortunately my friends are in their late 70s so there is no access to a work computer for many years. If I remember correctly, Bruce is self-employed so his home computer is his work computer.
On the Verizon offers, we got one in the mail yesterday 3 months free then $19.99 (plus taxes and fees in very small letters) for months 4 through 12 provided you have Verizon voice. The offer is for up to 1Mbps download speed.
Is Verizon voice VOIP? Of course we don't have no want that. We have a copper wired phone system needed for our burglar alarm, unless we set up a cellphone system which costs more and the response time is increased, and also for my husband's pacemaker readings that have to be done using a corded phone. We do have several cordless in various rooms. |

blsJason & OG1:
Is PoetWorld faster than All2Easy?
Re: DSL vs. Cable - I've spoken on the phone with various people, one of whom insisted that Cable is twice as fast as DSL, whereas another one said that Cable is only a bit faster than DSL. Wherein lies the truth, that's the question.
Meanwhile I'm ploddingly enduring dialup (preferable to dragging by bus to the library)
Is there any forum or Blog on the www which provides a voice to the public to complain about the Digital Divide? (I tried Wisebread - but crazily, they seemed to take the status quo in stride). So are dialupers now in the extreme minority? Or aren't people going broke? |

1. NO, only difference is price - All2easy is cheaper - both have 200hr/mo max.
2. Cable is faster than DSL. HOWEVER, most people do not notice the difference in surfing / downloading. For some websites - viewing streaming videos is a "stop and go" affair if you have the slowest DSL. DSL is a solid and CHEAPER broadband option for most users. |

| I don't see how a "voice to the public" will speed up dial-up. The only choice is to stop using dial-up and get DSL or cable. I am just fine with dial-up for the basic internet chores. |

| $15-$20 per month is less than bus fare. I am only paying $10 more than the $5 I was paying for dialup. Many users are paying $10 / mo for dialup. An extra $10 gets them DSL - a no brainer because there are more pros to DSL than cons. |

How about this:
Just like Gmail offers an HTML-view option
And just like Google allows you to click the "cached" link on search-yields (followed by Text-Only version)...
Both of which mimick the speed that dialup used to be
..similarly, maybe some software can be made available which would offer dialup users a way for every site to display speedier in the same way that HTML-view speeds things up?
Another Q:
If DSL or cable companies would charge $5 a month, would they lose alot of money? I.E. what's the minimum they need to charge in order to break even each month? |

Thanks for the info :) and sorry for the delay since my YahooMail often Bulks notifications. (I often don't get around to placing stuff on the do-not-bulk settings.)
As for DSL, [sigh] there's budget priorities - with food & survival being foremost. Maybe i'll try my luck at the lottery. |
