I know this is old question but a year of researching and only dead ends. How do I connect a kids computer 266 MHz to internet with my router?
No settings I have tried works.
I barely got knoppix to run, which found the internet but kept locking up and furiously spinning cd. I swapped out cd rom for faster one, now I get unable to find knoppix file system. 98 sees and reads cds fine on this drive.
I am downloading vector linux light. But unsure how big to make the partition and if they include a non destructive partitioning tool. I need to keep 98 since I doubt if wine can run many of her games. _________________ Thnx. But really, adulation isn't required.

I am trying now the "knoppix nodma", however, while the os loads/kde crashes, now the ethernet port won't work and no Internet. _________________ Thnx. But really, adulation isn't required.

I assume this is windows 98 but since you mentioned Knoppix, someone moved the thread to the linux section.
Here are my notes on windows 98, using a cable modem and linksys router...
I started here http://www.homenethelp.com/help/networking-me.asp
because I had computers with 98SE and ME
Go through step 2 through 13 under the section titled Tip #1
98SE doesn't have some of those protocols listed when you look in the Network section.
So select Add Protocol, highlight Microsoft and select ipx/spx
I don't have 98SE set up anywhere so I have no way of checking to see better details to add to my notes. Sorry. |

Thanks, I think you had the first ipx mention, which I think was problem.
However, I had to add, but wouldn't let me add the ipx for the belkin. I removed the belkin network adapter from control panel, it picked up on plug and play on next boot then after final reboot internet connected. _________________ Thnx. But really, adulation isn't required.

Got working on notebook, but following directions to tee, no luck with desktop.
There should be a program to do all this automatically.
Also, if I try removing adapter for card in network connections, will it pick up automatically without win cd on next boot? _________________ Thnx. But really, adulation isn't required.

There is a program but I think it only works on XP and above...now to try and remember where I saw it mentioned and a link.
okay, I did some sleuthing and I think it is Network Magic by Cisco
http://www.purenetworks.com/
The home version
http://store.purenetworks.com/storefront/c...LY_01.html
is currently $23.99
I finally found the requirements
http://www.purenetworks.com/product/systemrequirements.php
it appears it won't work for 98; it has to be XP SP1 and above or Vista.
| Quote: | | Also, if I try removing adapter for card in network connections, will it pick up automatically without win cd on next boot? | That's not easy to answer - sometimes yes, other times no.
Can you pull the driver? If so, put it on a floppy or pendrive then remove the adapter. If it doesn't find it, point the install hardware wizard to the driver you archived.
Of course if this is 98, I'd have to say NO! For the most part 98 is not plug and play. Even when I had the driver, quite a few times I really had to struggle to get 98 to use it even when I showed the OS exactly where the driver was. It kept saying, "there is no information about a driver in this location". I do not miss 98 at all.
I have Vector Linux (it could be 5.1.1) installed on a 4GB second hd in a desktop originally running 98SE. So your lite version wouldn't need as much room. |

Here is a step by step guide to setup a WIN98 system on your network or router connection. It was easier to give this link, than to sit and type the directions. As well, pictures sometimes help

At this point-pre following techie and last plodder links, I got the ME to network but not 98SE. I am wondering if I need to uninstall adapter for card and reinstall as final step. I tried to reinstall but asking me for a novell disk, which I suspect the 98 install disk?
I did get vectorlinux to install (versa video only) and adding inet got it to network. But this was radical since I took 6 gigs of the 14 gig HD for the OS. Plus the learning curve is a bit steep for a kids computer. Only advantage I see is I cannot get a modern browser installed on the ME machine, while Linux has Opera 9.6 and FF 3.
I will study and try further the last two posts to get 98 to network. _________________ Thnx. But really, adulation isn't required.

If all else fails, I had a 98SE Micron nb that didn't have a modem nor a NIC. I purchased a USB to ethernet adaptor.

oops, I see that one requires 800MHz and ME or above.
Mine worked on 98SE and the computer was 366MHz.
I'll see if I can find anything that says it works with 98SE. It came with an install disk that had the proper drivers.
I know longer have the adapter - I sold it or I'd send it to you so you could try it.
I found two that say it will work on 98SE

I'd stick with the cheaper one because it shows it comes with a CD. That would have the drivers on it.
I looked over the ratings on the $13.99 model, starting with the lowest.
The two rated one star didn't want USB 1.1, wanted USB 2 and also had a problem with XP SP2. That wouldn't apply to you.
The two rated two stars complained about the 1.1USB and wanted something to use on a 24/7 server! Again, neither of those fits your situation.
The two rating three stars didn't want 1.1 USB and one expected it to work in 64 bit Vista! Again, nothing that would bother you.
6 gave it four stars and 37 gave it 5 stars. So if you want to spend $14 this might be the way to go to get 98SE connected to your network. |

| Try Puppy Linux cd. Last release 4.21 Be aware there is an official "retro" version that is supposed to be friendlier to old hardware. There are also unofficial "barebones" versions that are smaller and maybe friendlier to minimalist hardware. Puppy can run from cd or be installed in a number of ways. It can happily coexist with win98 on same partition if necessary. Post on Puppy forum with any questions. http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/ On very minimalist hardware usually works best to do full expanded install with a separate linux swap partion. Puppy should run on any computer that can handle win98. |
