Accidentally hit "save this password" when I was logging in here (library) today. Thot it would disappear after a reboot, but no it's still there in the pulldown.

I changed the PW, so no one can log in with it, but it bugs me to even have the ID lingering on a public PC. for example, someone can see that "newboy" is one of the regulars here, and hence, likely MOI....

how do i get rid of this? i thot highlight/delete did it at home, but doesn't seem to be sticking here. meanwhile, the "tools" column is missing in this browser...to prevent people from messing with the very sort of thing, i'm sure.

hmmm. what to do?

With Vista, control panel, internet options, delete browsing history.

Sometimes when the computer is turned off, the passwords go away.

Ask the librarian for help.

He/she probably knows who has the password to "unlock" the tools column.

OR

Change your password.

Please tell us which browser you are using that has the username stuck in the drop down menu. I believe you have to delete the cookie that is held by your computer.

If the TOOLS is missing from your browser, the librarian is probably the system administrator and has locked out the individual users to prevent them doing certain things. They would have to clear the computer for you. It is the same thing as if you were at work or at a hospital, the work stations are just satellites.

It is strange that the highligt with mouse then press delete key does not work.

In IE the cookies are stored in a file called Cookies. If it is possible to search [start> search] , search for a file called Cookies and either determine which cookie is a Freedomlist cookie or delete them all.

Alternatively do the following I do not know if that might be disabled
Alt + T
O [letter O not zero]
Alt + I
OK [or Enter]

In Firefox
Ctrl + Shift + Del
Clear Private Data [be sure cookies are checked or check them all]

There seems to be some confusion here.

You can clear your login cookie at freedomlist just by clicking the logout link at the top of the page, but that won't take your username and password out of the autocomplete list.

Passwords are not stored in cookies. They are stored by the browser's built in password manager.

Most public computers do not allow you to get to settings.
If the person in charge of the computers knows what he/she is doing, then the computers would be operating in kiosk mode. That means at the end of the day when the computer is turned off, everything done is lost. The next morning the computer fires up just as it was every one of the previous mornings.

I used a public computer on a ship last February. Those computers were never turned off. If I got to Juno and saww someone else's login info (yup, people don't erase things) I deleted it. I made sure that for every site I looked in at and had to use a name and password, I blanked out the name and password and logged out of the site when I was done. That's the best I could do not being able to get to IE's settings (yes, you had to use IE). On my next trip, I'll take my eeepc - my 2 pound miracle computer with me. Before I travel though, I do delete all my passwords, cookies, etc. so if I get separated from my laptop, no one can get in anywhere just by clicking on any bookmarks.

Sometimes during a work day I'll need to access some site that is blocked at work, and I walk to the library to use a computer. Similar to what plodr described, the computers at my local library resets IE after every USER, because a library card number is required to log in.

yeah, so does mine, but then if i go to hotmail or netzero or maybe here, stick the cursor in the ID box, and do a right-click, up pops my ID. or at least after i type "n", it autocompletes it.

i do think it got flushed at the end of the day, but my understanding was that it was to be flushed w every new USER like plodr said. which it wasn't.

oh well, at least it doesn't have the password. last time i was at the library (few years back) it was a free-for-all in terms of previous IDs/PWs/temp files/caches/etc. sometimes w/o even TRYING, i'd find myself in someone else's inbox!

hence my fear of libraries....

yeah, THAT hasn't been a problem in recent years.

otoh, how does one get hotmail to SAVE a password?! or even an ID?!

i check "remember ID" and "remember PW" every single time that i log in (home/personal PC; thread was initially about library one), yet EVERY SINGLE TIME, it makes me type them from scratch again!

didn't USED to be like this!

Mad

PS: i don't have this problem with nz/juno...or f/l...or any number of other sites. they autolog me in just fine...like hotmail USED to....
