Can somebody help me please! I am at the hands of some "spyware" "adware"..whatever it is. I received an email from a friend, who asked how my weekend was, and that he had sorted out his new web site, and that I should take a look....knowing him...I did just that. A message arrived that said I needed "codec to proceed, which I agreed to and downloaded. "A video appeared of a young lady, clothed, dancing, whom then asked me to kiss her ****! My Norton 2002 antivirus, old, but updated, sprung into action letting me know that there was a "trojan" onboard, and that there was nothing that it could do about it. There were attempts to send information out from my pc, the first of which went, the rest I have managed to block, so I am a little concerned as to what has been looted from my little plastic bag of tricks! Scans for a virus with Norton showed nothing. I am operating on XP, and have IE as my browser, which incidentally, has "safetydefender".com as it's home page that I cannot seem to change permanently....then there are the occasional pop-up's saying...

and yes you have guessed it, the pop up takes you to a site (Malwarewipe), in order that you pay monies to have their software remove the problem and protect your system, this seems to be the re-occurring site to which I am directed...Hmmmmm? :???: . I have read some of these forums, from here and elsewhere, and have had limited success in taking aspects of "spyware" off my system. A re-scan showed that things that I had removed had returned, so is there a fix? I have used EWIDO, which finds the aspect that re-installs itself, I have used Ad-Aware Personal, HIJACKTHIS, Panda Active Scan, smitRem, Spywareblaster, ATF cleaner, Killbox...I am guessing things are better than they were, but still not as they were prior to my invasion! ...and my cooking isn't gourmet, so I might have made some crucial errors in making my pastry...... as it were...Incidentally, my system restore facility has been affected and all days of this month (April 2006) are in bold type, and you can't select any for a bit of "Tardis Travel". I am quite ok with computery things, and would really appreciate anyones help if they feel they can tackle this problem. I await my night/nightess to come to my rescue with a pc version of a mighty sword. I will be on my hols from May 1st (PM) until May 7th (PM) so I am not been rude, I am just not around if you decide that you can help me,

That was the report after option 2, I ran that in "Safe Mode"..hence the delay...my home page has returned to normal now, by that I mean I can set it to "Google", and any new browser page is also "Google"...so progress....thanks...my next move...ewido...do I run that in safe mode?, then follow the findings, and post the report......then run option three...safe mode...?....sorry for been a bit dense!...and thanks for your patience. .....Is there anything that I should worry about, that could have been sent within the first batch of collected information?...and the Norton keeps picking up a "Trojan" attack, any tips other than the normal updates etc...I thought about changing from IE as a browser, heard that was a good move, but I am a little naive. Hi, Scudda. I expect you're resting before starting off on your Holiday. When you return, however, you need to update Sun Java to avoid the Vundo infection. See  Sun Java Vulnerability   for information about uninstalling the previous versions.

As to switching from IE, that is your choice. Some people prefer IE. Personally, I like Firefox. Since my machine is secured, that isn't the issue. I prefer the increased speed of page loading with FF on dialup as well as the tabbed browser and some of the add-ons.

For additional information on protecting your PC, please see Tony Klein's  "So how did I get infected in the first place?"   for important tips on how to prevent future infections. There is also a lot of helpful information in "Mitch's Good Stuff" linked from  here  .

Install and update both SpywareBlaster & SpyGuard to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software:

Hi, I will certainly look at your reccomendations, I have been battling with getting my "system restore" operable again, it was looking for a couple of paths to get sorted, and I found them...you know I have seen stuff no lad should ever have to see!....the guts of my software is mind boggling....lol...anyhow the "system restore" seems to be working...though the past will remain the past as I have restore points from "now" onwards...still that's how it is.

You're better off with a cleared system restore and setting a new restore point now anyway. You certainly wouldn't want to restore to an infected time.
