I just received an email from GoBigWest stating they will be raising Dialup service to $8.95 per month. It seems to me to be too big of an increase. I know they give you good service, but is there anything out there that can match them for less money?

When DSL is getting cheaper, how could dial-up consider raising rates? Last gasp of a dying breed?

I would consider  http://vtisp.com/  at $3.95 per month,  http://dialup.cc/  at $4.94 per month, and  http://all2easy.net/  at $4.95 per month, all paid monthly.

http://dialup.cc/  is a new ISP, but the owner has been posting here for over two years, so hopefully it was well planned out. Longtime Freedomlist member Pete is currently a subscriber and has reported good service so far.

http://vtisp.com/  and  http://all2easy.net/  are well established and will hopefully continue offering good low cost service.

You just set up a DUN to connect. There is no software. Just remember that although everything seems to be going well, they have been open for business for only about 18 days. pete is well respected, but all he can report is service so far. Nobody knows how this or any other ISP will perform in the long run. But if it were me, and I needed a dial-up ISP account with up to 400 hours allowed per month, I would certainly give  http://dialup.cc/  a try.

Dial-up will rise because costs are not met. Like me when I had my ISP. I couldn't meet demand because I didn't have the in house labor. When I hire a guy, my costs rise.

Just because DSL is coming down in price somewhat doesn't mean that cheaper technologies will just become cheaper and cheaper and cheaper.

Look at buying a Cadillac versus a hyundai. Just because a Cad has better features and probably better reliability than a Hyundai does not mean a Hyundai will drop its price until it equals zero. Labor and administrative as well as equipment costs will never adjust from that.

Just wait until the industry digests the FCC ruling that DSL is an information service, essentially locking out wholesalers. When DSL jumps back up to 40 bucks a month here in the next year, don't be surprised. The reason we are seeing 14.99 and 20 dollar DSL is because the product is slower than cable. Once speeds come into line with FiOS, you will see that price jump dramatically once again. Dial-up is never dead, because price is always a factor for customers. Thats why Netzero continues to have huge gains in the dial-up market.

GoBigWest has been an excellent ISP; however, the increase is too dramatic for me. I'm shopping for an ISP again. When you're poor, you have to go with the best deal around! Shame on you

Re: GoBigWest.com . .......... Talk with a sales rep at GoBigWest regarding an annual payment plan or email 'Frank' at GoBigWest regarding other payment plans - long term for special customer consideration. .................... GoBigWest contracts its services from wholesaler Ikano Communications (Salt Lake City) which also services Sisna.com - a provider of business products and services regarding Internet services. .......... It's possible Ikano also raised its rate structure leaving not much margin on the two to three dollars per month mark up on subscriber accounts at GoBigWest. .......... Low cost internet services from wholesaler Ikano is not a large part of their total business so some accounts that go away from GoBigWest won't make a large difference. .......... Service availability, reliability on technical issues and tech support - 24/7 are factors to be considered on any Internet service plan. Web sites:  www.gobigwest.com  .  www.sisna.com  .

Hey Guest....

I am going to draw some comparisons... Hope that is ok.

IKANO just digested Dialup USA which is one of the bigger wholesalers and aggregators selling dial-up access. With that acquisition I would expect if they took a big enough chunk that prices would rise somewhat.

I have not seen this with IKANO though, which makes me think more towards the first theory I offered. If the owners of GoBigWest are watching, I may be able to offer you something... Just let me know.

IKANO operates a lot more than just SISNA too... FYI
