I have a computer running Windows XP with IE 6.0 and have no problem surfing the web...but am unable to open my Yahoo inbox to read or answer messages. My login is successful but then I cannot open my inbox on my computer. However, if I go to an Internet Cafe or use another computer, this problem does not happen. I have just downloaded and re-installed IE 6 but this does not help. Can anyone suggest why I am having this difficulty with Yahoo e-mail and what can be done to fix it? Thanks.

Are you using SP2? If so, does an info bar appear at the top of the browser window? You can use the info bar to change the settings if necessary.

I have the standard tool bar on the top; what settings would need to be changed? This morning I just downloaded the latest version of IE 6 which shows under help as 6.0.2800. Until recently I had never problems with yahoo e-mail and a friend just tried to access her e-mail on my computer and she also could not do so, so I do not think it has anything to do with the particular settings on my Yahoo account. This has been going on since September 16, so I also do not believe it has anything to do with Yahoo e-mail temporarily being down.

Just a guess, but I had a favorite chat room, that I was always able to use. Suddenly, I was no longer able to enter the room. By accident, one day I tried to enter using my free 10 hour net zero, ISP. I was able to enter. I called my regular ISP and told them about my problem. They of course knew nothing; the next day I was able to enter using my regular ISP, again.

Bottom line, if you have an alternate ISP, try getting your email by using it.

But do you have Windows XP Service Pack 2?

You said you can login successfully? Where does the login take you? Do you get to the main YahooMail page, where it says Welcome, XXXX, and says you have x many unread messages? Or does it take you somewhere else?

I think Boz is probably right, the infobar he is talking about is not the toolbar, this if I remember right appears right below the Address bar, just a think bar that says something, like Popup Blocked or whatever, and give you options to do whatever it is you can change.

Also, go to Internet Options, and see what you security and privacy setting are? Try adding "http://us.f115.mail.yahoo.com" in Trusted Sites in the Security tab. Just some ideas, keep posting more info, someone will figure it out.

I just have to wonder if SP2 is blocking something? It is just a thought. Are you SURE there is no info bar just below the regular tool bars that appears when you click on your inbox? Try holding CTRL when you click on your inbox.

Exactly...I get to the screen that says there are XXX messages in the inbox. And then I am not able to read them. I will try that Trusted Sites entry and see if that helps. Thanks for your input.

Boz....this same thing happened before I installed Service Pack 2...which is the reason I installed Service Pack 2. Thought that might cure the problem. Could it conceivably be a server problem? I have tried everything to fix it and can't...so I am wondering whether prodigy.net is the culprit.

I spoke to my ISP and they claim the problem is not with them....would any helpful soul out there have a telephone number for Yahoo customer service? I cannot find it on their web-site and they have not responded to any of my several e-mails sent from an Internet Cafe where I can access my in-box. Thanks again.

Check the cookie settings for your browser, firewall and/or cookie control software. If you're not saving the Yahoo cookie, your log-in won't last long enough to check your mail.

Also you may try clearing cookies, temp files and history as if a cookie gets corrupted, you can get blocked. It can happen when the routing is changed and your cookie wants to go the old route thus blocking the flow you need to access. Don't forget that all of your passwords to sites will disappear so write them down first!

Can anyone help? I tried all your suggestions, but it still hasn't worked. I see welcome "xxxxxxx" you have "22" unread messages, but then my inbox never opens. question My ISP is Bell South DSL. I don't have the S.P. 2 for my Window XP, however, everything else is the same. I also know the problem is not my ISP as I have used a different computer here and it has worked. That computer, however, is most unfortunately down right now. This computer has not been able to open my Yahoo inbox after loging in in a couple of months. I would really appreciate your help. Thanks!

I forget who this was or when the thread was, but a few months ago, I remember another Freedomlister that said they were unable to perform some functions with Yahoo mail. They contacted Yahoo tech support, and they told him it was because he was using an ad-blocker - they have a way to tell if your computer/browser is accepting their ads - if it isn't, they don't let you access those functions until you turn off your ad blocker. Maybe they've added the simple task of accessing your inbox to those functions.

I don't think I have any ad-blockers on my computer. I don't have SP2 either. Is there any way I can be sure?
I have cleared out my cookies, but made sure yahoo's are always allowed and lowered safety/security settings.

1. Bruce, ad blockers don't have an affect on yahoo mail. I use AdMuncher and have no problem accessing my yahoo email account.
2. kay, are you using XP's firewall? If so, you may need to check something so mail can get thru.

What you want to put a check next to might be Internet Mail Server SMTP.
3. If you don't have XP's firewall active then answer the following:
a) Are you using a firewall, if so what?
b) What OS was the computer running that was able to access your inbox?
c) Do you go to  www.yahoo.com  first then log-in or do you use a shortcut on your computer to go directly to the mail site?

yesterday the same problem arouses me, i wasn't able to open my inbox or check email, the browser simply returns a "The page cannot be displayed" ad so do with other email programs, then whe i try to check my email in another cafe, i was able to ope it. why? wtf happe to my pc, i have just reinstalled its windows(XP) ad i did not have a SP2....anybody has suggestions about it.

What I have found is that emails admins for what ever security reasons have lowered thier MTU access to certain sites. High MTU transfers are looked upon as spam or some craziness. Most phone folks have no idea what MTU's are. Lower your MTU settings and see if that helps. the suggested setting here would be 1300. you may need to use TCPIP Optimizer from speedguide.net
