|
|
Currently - Sunday July/11/2004 ~ 4:00PM EST - I do NOT seem to be able to navigate to anywhere on the web with VroomSpeed OFF.
I keep getting - the error -
The page cannot be displayed
Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer
I am using VroomSpeed but with the SlipStream Software client ver. 3.1.68
I can navigate anywhere I tried with VroomSpeed ON -
but as soon as I turn VroomSpeed OFF - I keep getting the "The page cannot be displayed" error on any url I tried.
It has (obviously) never done this before - as I've done plenty of connect speed testing switching from VroomSpeed ON to OFF and back again.
I first observed this about an hours or so ago - when I dialed in to have the Windows Update come up - and when I tried to Update an item the VroomSpeed pop-up blocker stopped the install procedure - so I tried turning VroomSpeed OFF - resulting in every single URL I tried getting "Page not Found" error.
So I thought it was just that one session -
I've tried all the following to no avail -
Closing all instances of IE6 and starting with a fresh IE6 open.
Disconnect and start a new dial-in session with new open of IE6.
Shut-down and restart of computer - and new session.
Shut-down/restart computer - turn OFF VroomSpeed and new session.
I speculate that this may be a fault on my system -as I can't see how the VroomSpeed/Slipstream server/network could affect this -
but I am open to suggestions......
So it looks as though my IE6 seems to be stuck in working only with VroomSpeed ON mode - for the moment.
I may try to UNinstall VroomSpeed/Slipstream 3.1.68 to see if this problem goes away - if it doesn't then I think I may have somehow had my IE6 or system corrupted -
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Very Weird -
I have solved the problem - but it had me very worried for some time -
Even after UNinstalling the VroomSpeed/SlipStream software client (v.3.1.68) I could not connect with any web site - "Page not found" error.
So I really thought that my IE6 was corrupted or managed to get set somehow not to recognize that I was on-line and connected.
I simply tried another A4L phone # - and all seemed to be OK -
So I tried my default phone # again - and it would not find any url -
BUT when I re-tried the successful # it now too would not find any url......
Shut-down/restart - the working number worked again -
tried default # and it still would not find any url -
any subsequent different number DUN connect now would not find any url.
So it looks as though the default DUN number causes all subsequent dial-ins regardless of phone number to fail to find any url........
I set up another brand new DUN with the same dial-up number as my default DUN - shut-down and restarted the computer - and the new DUN with the same default phone # works - and will find any url I try.....
So to cut a long story - LONG
It looks as though my default DUN somehow got corrupted -
and caused IE6 not to be able to find any url.
A new DUN set up with the same phone # seems to be working fine -
with VroomSpeed ON and OFF - I am on it right now.
Like I said very Weird........ _________________ Vincent

| I've been having some problems with Vroomspeed also. On my daughter's computer I have frequently been having a problem where IE6 locks up. Sometimes with Vroomspeed on I start to get the website can't be found page, then when I try to close IE6 I get the "This program is not responding" message and when I click the end program now button nothing happens. Then if I try to shut down windows xp nothing happens. I can't even CTRL ALT DLT. Since XP is locked up the only remedy is shutting of the power and restarting. This has happened frequently with Vroomspeed on. If I exit Vroomspeed prior to connecting I don't get this problem. I don't have this problem on my computer running Win 98SE. I sent in a trouble ticket and they replied but none of their suggestions have remedied the problem. I'm now waiting for their latest response. I am seriously considering canceling their service because of this problem and disconnects. It's a nice service when it works but not worth this kind of aggravation. |

Now I'm confused ..... (OK what's new )
Late last night the new DUN set up with my former default dial-in phone number also started to exhibit the same behavior -
ie: navigates fine with VroomSpeed ON, but cannot find any url with VroomSpeed OFF.
So... may be the problem is/was that particular Access4Less phone # ?
But why does it navigate OK with VroomSpeed ON?

Does VroomSpeed work as a proxy?
Look at your Internet Options in Control Panel...
Then in Internet Properties click on the connection tab...
Then click on whatever connection you're using in the box titled Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings...
Next click on the Settings button over to the right...
Check to see if anything is checked there... If it has a check mark next to Use Automatic Configuration Script or if there's one next to Use a proxy server for this connection, then that's probably why you're getting nothing when you turn VroomSpeed off, the browser is looking for a proxy that isn't there because its been turned off...
To get it to work without a proxy you would need to uncheck the box (copy the info down, just in case) and then try it...

Many thanks for that great input -
Yes, I believe that VroomSpeed works as a Proxy.
Indeed when I have VroomSpeed turned ON the Connection Tab under Internet properties for all my DUN settings are checked for Use Proxy server.
BUT when I uninstalled VroomSpeed/SlipStream client - these were NOT checked.
Because there was a difference between my at that time Default DUN (which showed this weird behavior) and the others I had set up - I checked the DUNs against that Default one item by item - especially the Proxy settings.
Edit -
Because of this great hint - I just re-dialed a new session using the old "bad" Defualt DUN (and phone #) - it appears to be working fine with VroomSpeed ON or OFF.
Checking the Connections Tab for this current DUN (using Tools - Interenet Options in IE6) -
when VroomSpeed is ON - Use Proxy is checked.
when VroomSpeed is OFF - Use Proxy is UNchecked.
But if I ever get this weird behavior again this will be the first thing I check while on-line.
