I've succesfully used SoCal when in Cal and as a free option with my cell phone when in areas without local dialup numbers. My daughter in Anaheim uses it exclusively for email and web surfing.
Another option: Fastfreedialup;  http://www.fastfreedialup.com/free_dialup_...ml#connect

P.S.
SoCalFree tells you up front that their service is only good for web surfing and email. Downloads and other such uses of the internet are not available. Fastfreedialup does not seem to have such restrictions.

Of course, I see no reason not to use both...

I've had no trouble using SoCal as my back-up ISP for many years now.

I finally trust that the service is going to be here so, I've been thinking about dropping my paid ISP and using the money for a web accelerator, using SoCal as my primary ISP.

Any thoughts?

I just set up my cellphone as a dial-up modem with my computer, and it works great. I don't get charged data (only airtime) for dialing up with it.

Only problem was, I didn't have a dialup account. My parents do, but they use it (and live in another city). I'm not about to use my phone to dialup their account whenever I need it. Now, I have DSL at home and blazing internet on campus, but sometimes I'd like to have internet access on the road.

Since it's cellular (and quite slow - I think it's limited to 14.4 by the phone, as I'm not using my provider's data connection), it doesn't matter that it isn't in my area code (in fact, I'm in the bay area).

So, long story short, I wanted a dialup ISP for occasional, limited use as a supplement for when I'm not at home, school, or in wifi range, and, furthermore, I didn't particularly want to pay for it (or at least, very much). Thanks to Google and Freedomlist, I found SoCalFreeNet, and it looks like just what I need. I'm on it right now, and I'm very pleased with it so far.

It's perfect as a back-up for me. It's easy. It's free. It's slow but I'm slow too! Grin

Hey Screw,

Are you running a Win98 machine? Could be that pesky log on to network box is checked. I think Netzero and Juno automatically disable that and it could be your culprit?

Though I haven't use it all that long, so far it's proved rather good. Biggest drawback I've encountered is the time logging on and being confirmed after handshake-protocal finishes. Such usually takes NZ and Juno only a bout 5 seconds or so after the last ping/click. With SoCal the process lasts nearly a minute typically. Otherwise. Connection speed seems a tad slower that NZ and Juno--- but not enough to kick about. Downloads take a while but elsewise go fine, it seems. No problems with ftp or https either. Can take a number of tries to get connected--- but sometimes only two. Kind of a bane when you hear a recording out of the spoeaker-box saying all circuts are busy. But, still. Dunning is great. No software to clog up your RAM as with NZ and Juno--- and so make your computer crash. No idle level set either, so that it automatically disconnects if you leave the room for a bit. I think it automatically disconnect after 3 or 4 or so hours, regardless of activity.

Only standard dial up is offered as a free service as available. SoCalFree main business model is voice mail.  www.SoCalFree.net  .

I have been using the isp on and off for the last year, and was curious about their dsl service. Dial up is fine for now but dsl would be faster. If anyone could tell me about the prices, that would be great. I've looked everywhere for the information but have not been able to find any.

Stupid people who dial up to different area codes SHOULD EXPECT to incur long distance charges!

I use this as a back up incase my dsl is down. I use to use it all the time before I had high speed with good speed, but since last year 2005 it has been very slow, i've emailed socalfree a few time they always say the speeds are all over the map with others. I not sure if it is at my end,but i've not chancged anything and every time it would be slow {when it was my primary isp} it was because something was accendentally changed at their end.

I think this may be the case this time as well, The speed is painful only 26400 This is what it use to be like when they had the old equipment a few years back. I hope they get it fix or I find the problem ,because my dsl contract will be runnung out soon and i'll back to 56k for a while.

Anyone else getting slow speed as of march 27 2006?

Try  http://sdfree.net  or  http://www.sdfree.net  . Service only avaiable in southern California.

Post  Title: Reliable, 48,000 bps, infrequent falloff, free

Morris
Guest
As I write this, SoCalFree.net provides me with a free 48,000 bps DUN dialup connection in Southern California. In fact, in two years of use, I have never had anything but a 48,000 bps dialup connection from SoCalFree.net.  http://www.SoCalFree.net/

So given their track record day and night for seven days a week for over two years, I think I can recommend SoCalFree.net and their free dialup service. I can also recommend their paid voice mail services, which in their Southern California service area are excellent. Really excellent voice mail services in Southern California, I promise you.

Returning to dialup, in addition to using SoCalFree.net, I also use Earthlink, Acanac (Canada), and All2Easy, with SoCalFree providing dialup service that is more reliable and stable than Earthlink, though slightly slower; more reliable and stable than Acanac, though slightly slower; and as reliable and as stable as All2Easy, though not quite as fast. I rate these ISP's as follow: Paid unlimited DUN dialup -- Acanac; paid limited (200 hours) DUN dialup -- All2Easy; free unlimited DUN dialup -- SoCalFree.net, hands down. Incidentally, we can safely forget the now-declining dialup service of Earthlink, at least in Southern California.

I can access secure SSL connections with SoCalFree, and I can also access FTP, though I mostly do FTP downloads for security updates.

Parenthetically, I am acquainted with numerous folks with limited financial resources that use SoCalFree as their free Internet lifeline. They use SoCalFree because the Internet has become their lifeline of choice, and sometimes their only lifeline. These are the same folks that use SoCalFree with their donated, rebuilt, formerly-disgarded PC's as their one-and-only Internet access, and what a saving grace this has been for the financially strained amongst us.

Is it possible, even conceivable, that what we have here in SoCalFree is an ISP with a social conscience?

Best regards,

Morris
