I guess it's time to toss this ISP as it is aggravating. I'm glad i haven't recommended them to my friends.

Still SOS, it's not them, but the jerks who sell them the modem use.
ns.eli.net
they also serve academicplanet in my area, but not for long.

we are creating a co-op for free internet in our community, we are buying a dlam to hook up and it will be supported by the community.

Post  Title: 15 minute, 3 hour rules

DominiRican05

I haven't joined Mailaka, I'm a college student, and have started looking around since I'll be graduating in a year and will lose my access to free campus internet. I know I started early but I want to make sure I make the right choice. In response to my question concerning disconnects after 3 hours of usage, they confirmed that it's true and that they do it to free up the bandwith. That is understandable but I found this to be more disturbing: you get disconnected after 15 minutes of being idle, which the tech support agent said would be the equivalent of writing a 15 minute long email.

So my question is for MailAKA users...does a pop up box come up and notify you that you're going to be disconnected after 15 mins, giving you the option to remain on? Or does it just disconnect you, no questions asked?

Thanks!

Post  Title: Watch out for $6.95 Gold Service

Dixie
Guest
My main problem with Mailaka is false advertising on their website... Both the Gold and Platinum services claim "No pop-up or banner ads." However, they are lying about the Gold--you do get pop-ups. They claim it means THEY won't send any pop-ups or banner ads, but that is NOT what it says. I have the platinum which does provide the pop-up blocker, but I recommended the Gold to my parents and they did not get what they were promised. Mailaka refused to do anything about it and apologized for OUR 'confusion' over the website. I will never recommend Mailaka because of the false advertising and they won't admit it or change it.

Hello,
This is explained in our FAQ, in the "Dialup Services":
User understands that unlimited service does not mean dedicated service.
Dedicated service shall be defined as an average of more than ten channel
hours a day, based on a thirty day calendar month usage report.

This boils down to 325 hours in any 30 day period.

Please let us know if you have any further problems or questions, and thank
you for choosing Mailaka Internet.

Whenever writing to tech support, be sure to include the text from previous
messages. This helps us stay on top of any issues. Don't forget to include
your full name and username; the faster we can find your information, the
faster we can get back to you to help!

Post  Title: limited access????

Rich
Guest
Last November (check posts) I posted a concern about a quote in Mailaka Use Policy:

Once the user has reached their limit, they shall not have access to the internet until the first of the next month.

Since their usage is unlimited, this is a network restriction, and I wanted to know how I could tell which dial up number is limited and which isn't. Several emails to their support simply evaded the question and I went to PWaccess instead.

Now that PWaccess is dropping newsgroups, I'm dropping them. I'd sign on to Mailaka in a heartbeat, but as far as I can tell, they still can't figure out which of THEIR OWN numbers are associated with an hourly limit.

I want to use Mailaka, as they seem to be the best choice for the price, but I keep coming back to that 3 hour limit thing. It's a real kink in what would otherwise be a fantastic ISP offer, in my opinion. I've dealt with similar limits before, but never one so unbelievably short. 5 hours, yes. 6 hours, yes. But 3? Yikes.

I just looked at their website for more information, and it says that customers will be disconnected 4-5 hours after signing in. You can reconnect after waiting 1-3 minutes. Here's their site if you want more details:  http://www.mailaka.net/support/connection_faq.php.

My guess is that the timelimit is more like 5 hours. For large downloads I would recommend using a download assist program. I have had good experience with LeechGet. I've downloaded Dreadweaver 2004 trial at 64 MB and Unreal Tournament 2004 demo at 210 MB. Yes sometimes it gets interrupted but LeechGet lets it take right back up and resume where it left off. I do miss my DSL connection though.

So with the 3 hour limit, you're basically unable to download anything larger than 15 MB or so? It's not often that I download anything that big, but I remember I had to stay connected for about 5 hours to download SP1 for Windows XP a few months ago.

I can't believe this outfit. Never mind the 3 hour cut-off they inflict on you, they provide no information whatever at their site and expect you to sign up on good faith alone. If you wish to pay phone charges, then you can ask for all the details that even mickey mouse ISPs provide up front. Sure the rate is good, but there's a minimum of service that's required no matter the how low the rate. No thanks as far as I'm concerned.

So far, I'm fairly impressed with the Mailaka/WebRunner combination. After one "scare" from TrojanHunter 3.7 (which was dealt with by an extremely quick response from Mailaka's tech support), there have been absolutely zero problems. After constant difficulties with Earthlink and their PropelAC accelerator, this has been a huge relief.
