This is the best deal I found. I got in way back when it was 5.95 (they still honor that price for me). No problems. Nationwide access, even here in lil ole Hawaii.

Post  Title: Mailaka

Guest

Mailaka was sold to a cost-cutting organization last year (some time around the end of September), and has gone downhill since then. That is why the contact information (address and phone numbers) have been changed on their website (if you check their FAQ you will see the old information as they have not updated each and every page as they should have).

Post  Title: MailAKA repeatedly Suspends your pre-paid account!

Mailaka_client
Guest
MailAKA has begun to screw up badly in their billing department. Last month they wrongly sent me a message that completely blanked my screen with the words: "Your Account Has Been Suspended!"

So I checked with my bank and MailKAKA had been paid!

Then I had to call four different phone numbers because the ones provided by Mailaka were wrong. Finally reaching their help agents revealed they had made an error, that my account was fine and I could log on again.

Wrong. It took three more long distance tolll calls before I could log on without immediately being told the account was suspended.

I wrote MialAKA an email but theitr reply was that it was "a server error" that is they have no responsibility for suspending your service even if you are fully paid up!!!

A month later, it happened again! Their system said again (wrongly) that my account had been suspended. Again, they had been already paid a week before.

So another email to them got another weasel reply that there was no problem they were actually responsible for, that another glitch may have "given users the mistaken impression" that their accounts had been suspended but this was in error.

No apology, no "we are sorry." No "here is what we are doing so it does not happen again." Just tough.

In sum, with increasing frequency, you may no longer get access to your MailAKA account that you have pre-paid for. They will be utterly unapologetic about it and incompetent to prevent it happening again and again.

Seriosuly consider another isp.

Post  Title: disconnects all the time

Guest

I finally gave up and moved to another ISP. I couldn't continue the "find the dial up number that doesn't disconnect" game.

This area is fairly rural, and ISP connections have always been problematic, but with most services, I could find one or two that worked consistently. Not here.

On the bright side, their customer service was prompt and polite.

I am very pleased with mailaka. For example, in the past month I have connected on the first attempt every time. Disconnects are infrequent. In my opinion, the service is a bargain.

I've been with mailaka for at least a year now, maybe a little longer, since maybe sept or oct 2003 ???

At any rate, everything is fine. On my 'main' computer I was having some disconnect problems, but it had a 'winmodem' and was the only computer that seemed to have connection problems. As soon as I got a REAL MODEM (i.e. a true hardware modem, not a winmodem) my connections have been rock solid.

Every once in a while I will connect and while all appears well, there simply seems to be no data transfer, the problem happens maybe once or twice a week, I just relog on and things are fine.

No problems whatsover with the POP 3 mail either.

Works fine on my linux boxes, as well as my DOS machines. Yes, you can do internet in DOS.

I signed up for $5.95 and mail in a check monthly, and am very satisfied.

Before getting DSL I used this service and was completely satisfied. I was working on the road and could not get an AOL access number in a town I was located in. Mailaka had access in that small Kentucky town as well as every place I needed it after that. Service was perfect and uninterrupted and their Customer Service was first rate. Their billing was exactly as they promised and they canceled my service when I asked them to without any billing hassles of any kind. They definitely rated 5 *s and I promise I am not related to them! Ha!

Post  Title: connections - I agree

Guest

Yesterday, the connection to Allentown was great. Today, I had to go through six of of mailaka's dialup numbers (Kutztown, Allentown, Hamburg) before I got a connection. Then it continually disconnects after 2 minutes on line. I get the the message that my password is wrong, then later it connects with the same password. Then an ERROR_PPP_TIMEOUT message. Then no connection at all. Next connection at 1,200K, WHOOPEE! Half hour just to get my emails. I keep hoping this ISP will get its act together, but it looks like it's just not going to happen. I don't have time for this; time to go ISP shopping.

One of the least expensive isp's, but the connection is lousy. Constant drops. Sometimes I get online for only a minute, then dropped. Many times no connection is possible. Very frustrating. Finally, after two months of disservice, I switched isp's.

Great connections for 4 days - couldn't last. Allentown won't stay connected 4 minutes, Hamburg won't even pick up, finally got Kutztown to connect pretty good on fifth try. This is really growing old.

Post  Title: connections shakey again

Service has been OK for awhile, but tonight my connections are dropping out every one to nine minutes, regardless of what connection number I use. I've been online over 45 minutes, and still haven't gotten my emails through webmail. Took four tries to post this. Very frustrating. Good service WHEN it's good, but frequently goes on the fritz.

I wrote the note about the problems. For the last 2 days, it's been pretty good. No disconnects, picks up on first number first time. Only 42K, but a solid 42 K. I know the lines here can get 51K.

Tonight, 2 dial up cities won't connect properly, the third keeps dropping me off. Something has been wrong with their servers for several weeks now. Yesterday, it took 11 minutes of trying various numbers before I could get a good connection.

I have been searching for a new isp where one can pay monthly or
quarterly by personal check. Mailaka seems to be one of the FEW.
My emails have been answered promptly and it seemed like a go.
Unfortunately I have read a few things here which disturb me. One
reason I am dumping my current isp is the constant pinging they do.
I WILL NOT tolerate that kind of p00p from ANY isp. Here is an
excerpt that raised the hackles on me lil ole head.........

>why they want to probe others machines for open ports to snoop is >beyond me.if you see ns.eli.net in your firewall logs then you know the >problem, i complained to mailaka.net about the situation and was >promptly booted from them.no refund,no explanation, nothing.got >another isp and emailed mailaka several times with no response.
>i wouldn't use anyone even remotely connected with lightwave >communications

This guy was BOOTED for asking a question? Thats absolutely
unexcusable, and worth legal action IMHO!!!

I also believe someone hinted they cut back or dumped Usenet?
They still advertize it. Then Someone else had a freedom of speech issue with them.
I don't know, I read lots of good press, then there are these little
"problems"............. In any case it always pays to stick with
businesses in your local area IF possible. If you are screwed
there are usually "other" options.
Peace

plus points for email responses. That's good
however, I suggest you DIY your dialup networking connection to Mailaka. I tried their mailaka.exe utility and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware reported several "possible browser hijack" attempts. Mailaka reset my IE home page to their page.
Overall it works good. I've been suffering some 591 or "cant establish dialupconnection" errors with their dialup. At least it's not the worst performance I've seen from an ISP. no busy signals, no instance of the modems simply refusing to answer.

and a pass on the fact that Mailaka can do nothing about SBC phone network.

I saw someone on this forum ask if Mailaka warned you before they disconected you on a 15 min idle time. I dont rember this question being answered by Mailaka on any other one in the forum. Can someone answer this question for me? Otherwise this seems like a good ISP but 15 min idle time boot is hard to get around. Not crazy about the 3 hr limit either in case of large download.

I haven't joined Mailaka, I'm a college student, and have started looking around since I'll be graduating in a year and will lose my access to free campus internet. I know I started early but I want to make sure I make the right choice. In response to my question concerning disconnects after 3 hours of usage, they confirmed that it's true and that they do it to free up the bandwith. That is understandable but I found this to be more disturbing: you get disconnected after 15 minutes of being idle, which the tech support agent said would be the equivalent of writing a 15 minute long email.

So my question is for MailAKA users...does a pop up box come up and notify you that you're going to be disconnected after 15 mins, giving you the option to remain on? Or does it just disconnect you, no questions asked?

Thanks!

Silly me, all this time I've been writing my emails first and THEN loggin on.

I keep getting disconnected after one second to two minutes, it's not my phoneline, or my computer, as i have another ISP that i use for business purposes. What is the problem i wonder?
I guess it's time to toss this ISP as it is aggravating. I'm glad i haven't recommended them to my friends.

I've been having the same problem lately, but I think I found the problem. It seems to only be a major problem on my 'main' computer, the one with WINDOZE and a WINMODEM. And it has been driving me up the wall.

I've got 5 other boxes in the house, and none of those have winmodems, they are all true hardware modems, because I also use DOS and LINUX on these machines. Although I get disconnected occaisonally, the real connection problems seem to be on the machine with the winmodem. It will be tossed in the trash can as soon as I can get my hands on a replacement REAL modem.

Since I'm here, I'd like to report I've been with mailaka for about 6 months now, and in response to a concern from another post here about being tired of being forced to use credit cards, mailaka DOES accept payments in the form of monthly checks, when I signed up I sent them an email and they replied sending me an email explaining how to go about it if you use the online signup process, of course I guess you could always call them long distance.

To their credit, they have always responded to my emails, even when I was at my wits end with the connection thing. Maybe their IS something about their network that causes some modems to be sensitive and causes lost connections, but after going from room to room and using my 5 other computers with REAL modems (i.e. non winmodems) and having solid performance, I think it's a pretty safe bet that when my replacement modem arrives I will be a happy camper once again.

part of a suggested 'solution' that tech support sent me in a reply to my connection troubles was to reinstall winmodem drivers and check modemhelp.org for driver updates, which is, I suppose, pretty good advice, I mean, that's about all you can do if you have a winmodem.

I think I'm gonna go a different route and chunk my motorola SM-56 winmodem in the garbage can and be done with all the aggravation.

I've been logged on my 'kitchen table' computer for the last 2 hours with no disconnects using a 33.6 K Texas Instruments hardware ISA modem with a rockwell chipset.... REAL MODEM, no problems!

Earlier tonite I was on the computer with the motorola SM 56 winmodem, and I couldn't get past loading a half a web page without getting disconnected, and I have tried every conceivable setting with that piece of (explicative deleted).

amazing, huh?
