Most isp limit your use, if you have been surfing for sometime you should know. Now peoplepc and juno or netzero don't. Of course I would not have any of those with there dialers.

Mailaka are crooks and thieves. They double bill you and bill you after cancellation. When you cancel, they tell you that you have cancelled successfully, but then do not send you cancellation confirmation and keep billing you. When you complain, they say you have no evidence you have cancelled (because they intentionally did not sent it to you) and keep billing you.
Many people have been burned by them this way - someone needs to start a class action against these thieves!

That is about 10 hours per day for a 30 day month - 8 hours for sleep - 6 hours for other things like rest, eating, etc. Dial-up access is NOT dedicated access even though both start with the letter "D". If you want unlimited, get DSL. Even cable internet puts limits!!

I am an instructor in the
Electrical/Electronics field and thought I had a reasonable understanding of the English language. Well Mailaka has changed my mind about that. I thought unlimited meant no limits. Our internet got shut down and so I contacted them. Someone called me and told me we went over our 300 hour "limit". I said it is advertised as unlimited and she asked me if I read the "terms of use". I said if I did that for every service we have I wouldn't have time to answer the phone. She said it was in there that we are limited to 300 hours in there. I thought limits were 10 years ago and there was no such thing anymore. There has to be some violation of false advertising because that is beyond misleading!

I went to Mailaka after access4cheap, too. I was happy with them for quite some time--over a year, maybe two. They were only $4.95 a month, with newsgroup access, and I had no connection problems. It was noticeably faster than my parents' dial-up service, too. Recent experiences have soured my view on them. Unlike the OP, I got no notice when the rates were jacked up, and it took me a few months to notice that I was paying almost double what I used to for what was, by then, a backup account to my dsl in case of travelling or other problems. I formally notified them that I was cancelling my account after I moved six months ago via their web form, but I've been unable to get any response from them and they continue to charge me.

Boz, here's what they emailed me. No matter, I've got most of my windows and linux and DOS computers ppp tcp/ip dialers and pop email accounts already switched to dialup.cc and may as well stay. dialup.cc will also give me free months for bringing my friends over. Nothing against mailaka, but had they played ball with me, they would still have me as a loyal customer, now they lose me, and whoever else amongst my friends I referred to mailaka if they want to save a few bucks a month. mailaka never offered me free months for the many referals I gave them. Nothing personal, apparently they don't need my biz, or my referals anymore, thatzzzzz the way the cookie crumbles. also, considered totalspeed.net for $5.95 plus $1.00 for pop3 email. I got 400 hours now with dialup.cc and 3 pop3 /IMAP email accounts, but no more 10 megs webspace and no usegroups. oh well....

Oddly enough,  http://mailaka.net/plans.php  still reflects the $6.95 Gold Service as available...

I was with them since the beginning around 2003, they were a solid service at $5.95 (promotional rate), then recently dropped their 'gold' service and said I had to pay $9.95 for their 'platinum.

I emailed to see if they wanted to keep me as a customer and it didnt' work out.

last week I switched to dialup.cc for $4.95 and everything is good.

They not only lose me, but several of my friends I refered are right behind me.

price and number of hours were good. i had an issue with dropped connections at first. i was lucky enough to have a couple extra access numbers, and that solved the problem.

e-mail was good. (spam control is excellent) customer support was friendly and PROMPT!

i used them as a back up for awhile. would consider using them again as a primary isp.

in short, they are one of the most STABLE isp's i've used so far. (especially if you're lucky enough to have two or three access numbers)

They did give me a cancellation confirmation number and I asked for a confirmation email to be sent to one of my other addresses, it was there that day. Always good to ask for a confirm email....then you have proof.

I tried the service for a few days, the customer service was very good when I signed up over the phone, no download requirements were needed which is a good thing. I decided to keep my old service as I was looking for a faster dial up connection and this was equal.
I called the customer service number and had no trouble getting a refund and stopping my service, the rep was very nice. The refund was back in my account within the week. I do not expect to be re-billed...I will let you know. Wink

Dishonest! I cancelled by phone and in writing. They continued billing me and withheld my cancellation notice for two weeks, then said that I did not provide evidence of cancellation in time, therefore they will still charge me. The billing person "Chan" in unethical and full of attitude - also stupid - kept telling me she has not received my e-mails, even though she responded to some of them.

Better Business Bureau could not help. The only thing that saved me is cancellation of the credit card. What a bunch of crooks!

Whois showed it is owned by Salim Zakhem of
Houston, TX.
I wrote to TX Atty Genl when they wouldn't stop billing me
after I filled in the "quit" form on their website. Then they
billed me TWICE in the next month. I got a note from some
woman in the "president's office" that I would not be billed
again. There it was back again on my credit statement THIS
month. And they don't seem to have any records of when
I was billed or that I quit. I even informed Laurie on tech
support that I intended to quit at end of month. Then I
wrote three more emails to tech asking for confirmation.
No answer. This is indeed a WEIRD outfit and when making
"mistakes" is so profitable I am certain they are intentional.
NOTE: Don't change your credit card account just because
of crooks like Mailaka...dispute the charges and have them
removed, writing a note that they are billing for service you
are not using and did not authorize.

Good Luck.

I had trouble cancelling. I used and was happy with their service for a year. But when i tried to cancel, they ignored my emails and calls. Then finally sent an email saying I was cancelled. Then, surprise, another month's fee is taken out of my checking account.

When I call to complain about that, they say I actually owed more!

Hey, it's only $6.95, but it's the principle of the thing. If they take an extra month from everyone cancelling, that really adds up.

Would not recommend them if you need unlimted. They have different defition of the worrd "UNLIMTED". There are certain restricitions as to how many hours month you can be on and after those hours you account is locked until next month. In terms of dial-up ISPs, "unlimited" refers to the number of times you can dial in to the service, not the number of hours you can stay connected. In many cases, it is not the ISP that sets the number of hours you can stay connected, it's the company that owns the number you're calling in to. So, your situation is not something limited to only this ISP - my ISP, for example, also has similar a provision in its terms of service.

Post  Title: Mailaka Connection Problem

Guest

I was a former Mailaka customer and had really good luck, I couldn't believe how fast it was for a dialup. I used it strictly for an outgoing mail computer when I was experimenting with something for a business I'm guessing two years ago. I recommended it to my mother recently because she can't get cable and doesn't want to pay that much for cable or DSL. I have been using one or the other for several years now, but I thought this would be a good cheap solution for her, but I was wrong. I have spent hour after hour with tech support recently and they can't even get this computer to connect period. I have tried 3 different modems, and last night I even tried (with their help) connecting my very new $2200 Sony Vaio laptop to their server with absolutely no luck. Obviously we have tried phone lines in two locations already, she and myself are about 5 blocks away from the switching station (in different directions) and nothing. Tried several different dialup numbers, nadda. This is ridiculous!

I'm pleased with my
Mailaka account but i don't understand why so many of my lengthier letters won't go out because of the parameter error. I haven't a clue as to how many words i'm allowed space for. This has been a significant problem. I'm pondering how can i might correct this? Shirley Bostian

I have had good luck with billing and connection, but I could not access my email one time for a week. I called and requested repair and specifically told them do NOT purge my emails. Mailala purged them anyway I never got to see any of them.

At the time I was waiting for several job replies via email, who knows how much I lost? They never responded to my question about why I was purged.
