Hey smurfy - Guess why they call it the "Niterider" account...could it be something to do with free access at night?? How would they make any money if they gave it free to daytime users?! Anyway, put down them Kleenex and quit surfing the net "one-handed"...

I think that the TPG Nightrider pack is not very good, seeing that people usually go on the internet DURING THE ACTUAL DAY! WHERE EVERYONE IS AWAKE! I THINK THAT THE 1AM-8AM PART IS STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been using TPG for probably over year, After six months you have to sign up again. For me the times are 12:30-7:30 since I live in South Australia, and I got my sessions to be 4Hours, although it is stated that it is 3hours. Their service is fast and reliable, and i do my downloadin on it. These days to sign up you need the name of a memeber that you have refered. TPG now also has a cool dial-up plan $16.99 per month unlimited Hours and Downloads. That is cheaper than anyone else. Also I use a mac and it has no problems with TPG, but it shouldn't have any problems since PPP (a standard) is being used.

there is such a thing as a debit (credit) card where you use your own money. a few banks offer it and it is the same as having a credit card (ie st george, first national)

Post  Title: Great Freebie

Unregistered

I've used TPG Niterider for so long I forget. A 12-year-old put me on to it. The kids know everything first. I also use it in Geelong where ISPs were expensive three of four years ago. I took advantage of the 1.00am-8.00am service for about two years then eventually took a WildPack subscription ($29.99 per 3 months). I'm beginning to think the Unlimited option may be a better deal at $16.99 per month - now that the MB limit has been downgraded from 100MB to 80MB.
Niterider works better than the paid service - probably because (as others suggest) nobody's up during those hours. I use Niterider as a supplement for downloading big files like trial programs and Mp3s. It's a great freebie - but, hmmm, why am I spreading the word? Wildpack net access has slowed down and takes more tries to log on - probably because of increased numbers of subscribers. Hope Niterider doesn't follow suit.

About pinging - whats that? How do you know you're being pinged?

I'm afraid the nightrider is no longer available for the insomniacs like me. My cousin (lucky b...) told me to go to the public library and rigester with tpg- nightrider, but unfortunately they removed it, so you nightriders over there enjoy while it lasts.
My cousin thinks that this service will be removed later if not sooner. I will change my mind when I see the nightrider register in on back again. So wish me luck next time I visit the internet on the library computer.

Post  Title: RE: credit cards

I have actually been able to find out that people who do not qualify for a credit card can actually get what is called a debit card. It works and looks like a credit card but the difference is that you have to put your own money into the card and you don't owe the bank or credit card company anything. The good thing is that you can only spend what you put into it so you don't get into debt. Ask your bank if they don't provide this service ask at a few other banks I heard that westpack and state bank do these cards. I hope this helps you :-)

Actually, thats not entirely true. Half of the people who spend most of their time on the computer are up at those times, I found it perfect for myself while I was still in Highschool, because I'd usually wake up at 1AM anyway and be unable to get to sleep. Though if I had a credit card, etc I would definitely take the step up to the Wild Pack at least. But nobody seems to support direct debit, which is the really annoying fact of the ISP's in Australia, since it's very hard for someone in precarious situation to get a credit card or VISA, even an account linked one.

The time hasn't changed. I do notice that people tend to be kicked at 7AM occasionally.
When the people who've just woken up all log on?
Could be that the DST is screwy on your local server though.

Post  Title: TPG rips off ADSL users!

Jason Etheridge (jason@etherid

I signed up for the ADSL "Metro 512/128K" service, which gives 512Kbps downstream on 18th February 2002. At the advertised rate (on their web page since 4th February 2002), I *should* be charged 15.9c/Mb for the first 300Mb downloaded per month, and then 5c/Mb after that.

However, my first usage bill indicated I was being charged a flat 18c/Mb!

After being given the run-around for a couple of weeks, TPG's customer service are now telling me that the "new" rate (15.9c/Mb etc) came in sometime after I signed on.

Very, *very* clearly a case of false advertising. I'm hoping that TPG can resolve the problem without me having to go to the ACCC!

I would STRONGLY recommend that if anyone signed up for any ADSL service in February, that you check your usage charge. You, like me, may get a most unpleasant surprise...

Note that the service itself is excellent; after some initial teething problems (the supplied USB modem was a dud, forcing me to upgrade to the more expensive ethernet modem), the service has run perfectly.
