THE FIRST FIVE PAGES OF THIS THREAD SHOULD SUFFICE FOR LINUX STARTERS.
HOWEVER, THE REST OF THE POSTS ARE ALSO INTERESTING/IMPORTANT.

Rute's Linux Tutorial
http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz
I was informed that Linux is freeware and that most Linux software is also Freeware. My interest in freeware paved the path for me to learn the basics of Linux.
This link is from the main Linux Site www.linux.org
http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/LDP/gs/node1.html
There is so much to learning Linux. I saved this document in as a Lotus word document, copying and pasting each chapter. It goes to 277 pages !!! However, it is not like just reading a book. There is so much logic to it. By the way, this manual is just a quick start guide with just the BASICS to get quick, up and running. There are a lot more details involved. Starting, Installing and Using Linux is certainly a long term project and not for the faint of heart. Just sharing the info. I got here.

99% of all virii are windows viruses and therefore are ineffective in
linux.
The above is also true for Linux.
So instead of downloading and discussing all these Security issues in detail, searching for freeware installing them, trying to find system resources etc., It might be worthwhile to learn Linux.
However, the benefits don't stop just there. Most software for Linux is free as well.
Several local user groups support Linux. Here is one local to me http://mlug.ca/faq/ Check out on Google for Linux User Groups close to your locality.

Got this from my local user group site:
Packages make it easy to install and use Linux. For a start, a package is OK. Best package currently seems to be Mandrake. Here is why:
http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/concept.php3
A computer running the Mandrake Linux operating system can be as easy to use as a computer which uses Windows or Mac OS -- a fact which has been Confirmed by many IT publications.
For personal home PC use this is the best product:
http://www.mandrakesoft.com/products/91/standard
[url=http://www.camelot.ca/en/search.html?session_id=da62ce436b1d60334d25b9a2dd92bf99&orig_language=en&orig_delta=15&start=1&hidden_words=linux&hidden_datafile=catalogue&hidden_section=LO&hidden_section=JE&hidden_language=L-A&words=linux&submit=Search&catagorie=283§ion=LO&level=N-0&language=L-A&cover=C-0&c_delta=100&listing=short]A Local Supplier: [/url]
This seems to have gotten quite easier than what I had earlier thought. However, it is safe to assume there will be some issues and not expect a smooth and fast transition.
Here is a good Online Linux Users Group: http://www.linuxquestions.org/

| If you know someone with a cable connection, you can download most Linux versions at www.linuxiso.org and burn them to a CD. |

If you just want to surf and do email, most linux distributions work fine once you get them installed without reading anything. For somebody just wanting to try Linux without changing anything on your hardrive, go find a copy of Knoppix Linux on cd. If your computer has at least 80 to 90 mb of ram memory (more memory is better) you can run it from the cd (actually runs in the ram memory and accesses the highly compressed files on the cd). No installation per se is necessary. However you will need to either re-enter all your isp info and bookmark info etc everytime you reboot or you will need to store the info on a floppy which then can be accessed at bootup. Works great. Most settings are automatic but for some reason it assumes you have large modern high resolution monitor by default. Since my 17inch monitor got blasted by lightening, I have been using a really old 15inch monitor. With Knoppix, I have to enter extra command to use 800x600 resolution. Otherwise I get a triplet image on my screen. I never did find a way to make it automatically use this setting. Maybe by recompiling and reburning the cd, but thats alot of hassle to avoid a 5 second nuisance. Knoppix can be optionally installed to hardrive, but for some reason not as nice that way.
Now if you want to install to hardrive, I recommend Mandrake, Lycoris, or Elx for newbies. I have been using Elx last few months. Its based on Redhat and thus has a few of the Redhat quirks, but with a very little tweaking to avoid some annoying settings, it is very friendly. Mandrake though has easiest and best installer. I personally like the Mandrake 8.x versions better than the newer 9.x versions. Hey if you really want a challenge, there is always EvilEntity Linux (gothic theme). It will make you learn to do lot of things manually although its a good stable distribution. The author definitely has an "attitude". Ironic name, I always thought windows was the evil entity.
Oh, those distributions that want huge amount of disk space usually also include a great deal of software. Much of this is optional in the install. This can be a real nice thing though. Installing software is Linux achilles heel. Linux software can have a lot of dependencies. If you want to install a piece of generic linux software, you may first have to go hunting for and installing various libraries and other dependencies that software requires. It would be kinda like having to go tracking down bunch of dll's every time you wanted to install some windows software. If you already have the software on the cd, it will also include any required dependencies. Also it usually all is rpm package (or Deb package for Debian based linux distributions) so installs lot easier than manual installation. |

Thanks TAD. That is helpful to know. If I come across someone with a Cable connection, they might perhaps be able to help me.
Here is a post from a Linux Pro
Linux still isn't easy. It is a completely different world from
windows. If you are afraid of User profiles and passwords in Windows,
Linux will be a bit of a shock. If you think the registry is geeky try
learning the what chmod 755 means. While Linux is getting user more and
more user friendly all the time, it is still much geekier then windows
(this from a professional geek who uses Linux on regular basis).
Don't expect to become proficient in Linux in just a month or two. Be
prepared to ruin your couple of Linux installs.
One major tip, do NOT under any circumstances run everything as root. _________________

I had to go thru a lot of trouble/time to learn several basic things about Linux. FL is a great resource, I have benefitted a lot from all the info. here. Hence, instead of just keeping all this helpful Linux info. to myself, I have also decided to share it here for anyone else who might be interested in the future. FL is growing and with increasing viruses etc., more people are expected to choose Linux.
Moderators, feel free to edit this list if needed for better presentation.

Note: Some of the links below maybe old/invalid. However, searching for them in Google etc., with the subject might bring them up. This is a true resource that I got from another Linux enthusiast after several requests.

From another thread, also posting it here for continuity and convenient reference.
Vijay
Linux is free but needs a lot of learning and getting used to. That is why it is important to set a Linux goal and have time table associated alongwith. The earlier the version the more geeky it gets.
Personally, I am just collecting some basic info. for now and making my time table and setting a flexible but realistic goal. For now there is no immediate rush for me:
Here is my plan:
1) Get Knoppix and get used to Linux Basics first
2) Read some Manuals to get familiar with that part - These are HUGE.
3) Read web-sites etc.,
The time span for all this about 6 months to a year. Closer to the end of this period, I will be sort of ready for a new PC. It is probably only then, I will install it in my New HD and start using it.
At that time I will have the following advantages:
(1) Lower Price of PC
(2) Better PC
(3) More Familiarity with Linux and
(4) most likely much more user friendly versions of Linux.
(5) by that time, I would have also used my current PC more.
When I am ready to install Linux, I will get the book: Red Hat Linux Bible with CD-ROM a week or two in advance and read it.
Best Regards,
Vijay _________________

A great post from another experienced Linux user assisting new members.
Of special interest is the Linux versions that run on a floppy drive !! Old but Gold
Vijay
I have been doing Linux since 1997. I usually
download my distros. There is a lot I do not know,
but get assistance from LUG members, and Newsgroups,
and I read the how-tos, and the FAQs. But, personal
assistance is best, quickest. Hope some of my
answers help some of you.
Size on the hard drive:
A typical install is about 1175 Mb of hard drive
space. A full install of RedHat9 can be 5Gb of space.
( you probably don't realy NEED to have ALL the
Developer tools!). If you are wanting to run minimal
with only the sawfish window manager you might get
away with about 680 Mb. A terminal console version
(Tom's Boot and Root - 2 floppies!) is about 2.8Mb.
There are some 30 MB business card distros, and some
180-210 Mb mini CD versions, that boot, run from
CDrom!
http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/KnoppixCustomizations
Other mini versions:
http://www.csoft.net/~dummy/robert/bookmar.../index.sht \
ml
firewalls: IPCOP is my very favorite, as it runs from
a 130mb hard drive, on any old 486, with two NIC's.
ttp://www.ipcop.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/IPCop/WebHome
Second and third choices are Bering, and the floppy
based ones.
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Operati...ns/Tiny/Fl \
oppy_Sized/
Security tools: http://www.knoppix-std.org/
Whenever I assemble a different system for a charity,
a foodbank, a family with low resources, I test the
system with a CD of Knoppix, first, it finds the
hardware! Copy config file to floppy (it is on the
menu). Use it for any other distro install!
Sometimes I let it install to the hard drive (in a
console, type: 'sudo /usr/local/bin/knx -hdinstall
and, in 20 to 40 minutes, Debian! (it needs 2.3GB). I
run a minimum of 64 Mb RAM, with a swap mem file of
141Mb. on old 366/400i emachines, others, with
on-board video/sound. Compaq Deskpro 2000's work good
on Storm2000, but, you need to update the 2.2 kernel
for security on the internet, run behind a firewall,
etc.
Cost of distros:
Downloads are free from http://distrowatch.com
or, the distro's home, or Freshmeat.net
Hope you got broadband!
Free from me, personally, in Orlando, Florida. Plus,
most LUG's, we all do appreciate you providing the
media.
Cheapbytes.com Very good quality, NEW boxed sets,
OR, the download version starting at 99cents per disc
OR, close out bargains starting at $1.00 !
CompUSA for RedHat ($39 for standard, ? for
professional) Difference? Commercial time trial
applications? Don't need them, myself. Run a good
LAN at home, SAMBA network for a winME system, and the
other dozen are all GNU/Linux, or, BSD distros.
