This may help or may not
The GSM/GPRS vs. TDMA/AMPS are different way your cell-phone talks over the air. They are two different standards.
I believe Europe was using more GSM and US more TDMA.
It look to me like GSM standard allows for more bells and whistles
You have to see which standard your carrier uses
I am not too sure who is using what at this time. _________________ Micah 6:8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly,

Provider Network type
AT&T Wireless TDMA
Cellular One TDMA
MCI WorldCom TDMA
Nextel GSM/IDEN
Sprint PCS CDMA
Verizon Wireless CDMA
VoiceStream GSM
If you want to buy a phone and are not sure what carrier you wish to go with, get a dual mode or tri-mode phone that way you can use it with a few carriers.
I'm not sure about Cingular, or the pay ahead phone services. |

The most important factor is which carrier gives the best coverage where you live or plan to use the phone.
For example, in the Washington DC area, we have ATT GSM, ATT TDMA, Sprint PCS (CDMA), Verizon (CDMA), Cingular (TDMA), T-Mobile (GSM), to name a few. Sign up with ATT and they will try to push you into their new GSM, but the coverage stinks. ATT's older sytsem, TDMA, has much better coverage.
You may be going at getting a cellphone in the wrong direction. Most folks sign up with a plan first, and get a special deal on the phone to be used with that plan. In many cases, the phone is free for a commitment to a particular plan for a year or so.
Suggest you determine the best carrier in your area first, and see what plans and deals they have that will best fit your projected uses for the phone. |
