Thank you curious john for being one of the few to take this seriously but this topic is going in the wrong direction. In my original question I was not seeking your approval concerning the use of a fiber supplement. Nor was it about oranges vs. blueberries, oranges vs. tomato juice, antioxidants or vitamin C.

I am under a doctor's care and my diet has been evaluated from here to Sunday. The decision about the use of a fiber supplement has already been made. I appreciate your input but unless you have a medical diploma hanging on the wall and would like to take me on a patient I think I'll follow the advice given to me by my doctor and my dietitian.

I came here with hopes that you would share your experiences with these various products. My impression of the demographic here at this forum led me to believe that there would be wealth of information. Usually when you get a bunch of seniors together in one place it's hard to get them to stop talking about their bowels.

You absolutely right victor. Lets welcome new member to our forum. Lets make him feel comfortable here.

I personally i stay clear from supplements, but i'm lucky that i can eat anything and it doesn't affect me - i never get heartburn or upset stomach. I think it's important to listen to your body and be conscious about it - just like that dog that eats grass. I doubt it ate grass because he felt hungry. He felt his body needed it. So yes he supplemented his diet with fiber if you can call it. Lots of times i observed cats and dogs eating grass.

Sorry, I was under the impression that you were asking for advice. I didn't know the advice was supposed to be limited to what you were already considering.

I'm pushing 70, so I guess I'm almost a senior. I suggested what works for me.

There's another nonfiber substance that will get you "moving"....

After you've put the car keys away for the evening, take about an hour and a half, to two hours, to sip down about 8 ounces of undiluted bourbon. You'll be "moving' by morning.....(Dosage varies depending on your weight, you're looking for an amount that won't produce a debilitating hangover) .....
Disclaimer: Long term use could have undesirable side effects.

Pete, you sound a little cranky. You know, that can be one of the symptoms when things start to back up. Roll Eyes Try a few extra shots tonight.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Yes it is true that I decided to use a fiber supplement. What I was hoping to do here was start a discussion about the different brands of fiber supplements on the market. I have only tried one of them and was hoping to hear what other people have to say about the other brands. They each make certain claims about efficacy, palatability and side effects; and the prices vary widely.

I started off with the question "What do you feel is the best dietary fiber supplement?", then listed 3 major brands, then I asked several questions that I thought might help get the conversation started, then I closed by saying that I had tried the Wal-Mart store brand.

In hindsight, I guess I shouldn't have asked "Do you prefer to get your fiber from other sources?". I didn't anticipate that that would be the only thing people would respond to. I got everything from bourbon to bedsheets to vacuum cleaners. Frown

If I'm cranky, it's because I stopped the bourbon therapy.

It was working too well, I was losing weight.
In spite of the extra calories, I was "passing" food before the nutrition was extracted properly.

Ok this explains a lot about politicians. Since nobody elected leaves Washington less than a millionaire, perhaps they are eating a too rich diet and that explains the crankiness and inability to get along. Perhaps they all need a good ole fashion high colonic enema to get things moving again!

Well, then perhaps the taxpayers should take up a collection and send a semi-trailer loaded with Colon Blow to the House and Senate with the remainder going to the Justice Dept. and the White House.

Where did your "impression" of FL forum members as "seniors" originate? You haven't been here long enough to really know us, much less stereotype us as a specific age group with assumed medical problems. Just because our 10-year anniversary photo shows us to be somewhat "older" does not mean that we consider ourselves aged and constipated. None of us are in nursing homes and, as a group, we're all pretty feisty. Just how "old" are you, Vic?

Sorry, I can't help you because I don't take any of the products you mentioned. My doctor found an anomaly in my system and told me that I should limit my intake of any fruits & vegetables with lots of small seeds and warned me to stay away from nuts (although I ignore this warning and keep coming back to this forum). I try to supplement my fiber intake with various fruits & vegetables and other (junk?) foods - breakfast cereals, cereal bars, etc. So far, I've not had any problems which would require me to take fiber supplements.

Unfortunately, I think you've discovered that it's hard for any of us to talk about our bowels when, all too often, we've got our heads buried up our (censored). shock LOL

Anyway... welcome to the forum. I hope that you won't judge FL too harshly after this first experience among us. I think if you stick around awhile, you'll find that FL members are a good group of people and are generally helpful. This thread strayed a bit off-subject but I think that can be attributed to our aging minds! LOL

I decided to split the thread where it veered off-topic. I read today interesting article about supplement industry manufacturing practices.

I know it scary, but it sort of ironic when guy gets poisoned by his own product.
