Kanotix is based on Debian Stable,..KDE desktop. I had the 8 Debian Squeeze DVDs,...so I used that to add the smaller XFCE4 desktop environment (and other apps as well. Being on dialup makes downloading any apps a real pain (so the repository DVDs come in handy.) Getting them from eBay is cheaper than ordering from an online linux shop, also.

Anyhow,...Kanotix (like a lot of other linux distros now) does NOT have any provision for using dialup!!! I had to use the Debian DVDs to add pppconfig and KPPP. Unfortunately,..KPPP didn't work for me,...so I added Gnome-PPP which worked beautifully.

I also have Vector Linux 7 on several more of my old computers. This is a Slackware-based distro,...and is pretty light on resources. Unfortunately,..the "Chestnut Dialer" that comes on it has a major glitch. First you have to run the "pppsetup" then you can open the terminal (as root) and type: "ppp-go" (just like regular ol' Slackware).

Puppy Linux still works best for dialup,...but I'm not using it so much right now. (I have Puppy 4.3 frugal install on W2K...on an old computer).
Puppy Linux has changed so much from the really good 4.3 and the 4.3.1 releases (in my opinion).

It's just sad to see that a lot of the newer linux distros are dropping support for dialup. And the ones that half-way work in dialup, have to have a lot of "tweaking" done to be able to work. At least Puppy Linux still works ....
