When you first start looking at Linux a newbie, it is daunting with all the different distributions available.

It's really what you will be using for and how much power the system may or may not have.

Most of the base designs of Gnome, KDE, XFCE, and LXDE, plus information of minimum system requirements, are explained here.

what i liked about this article is that it lists minimum system requirements for all the modern linux distros. Usually it's buried somewhere that it's next impossible to find.
