I see several regulars here are missing their avatars. Noticed this for sometime. Then realized suddenly that my avatar is gone also. Sad about this. What happened ? Why these Avatar's are missing ? I loved my avatar here very much.

you can link to an offsite image. Uploadd image to image hosting site like imageshack or photobucket and link to it in your profile.

Yes... in your profile there is a field that says "Link to off-site Avatar." You enter the URL for the image and that will display under your username on your posts.
If you don't have a file/image sharing account that allows direct hotlinking, you might want to consider viewing a list such as this one:
http://www.free-webhosts.com/free-image-hosting.php
Scroll past the ads and there's a listing of various free image hosts.
