Sort of continuing on from the discussion here , has anybody switched from Outlook Express on XP or Windows Mail on Vista to the Windows Live Mail Client? _________________

Thank you, OG1. Do you care to elaborate for those of us who have not made the leap yet? _________________ Freedomlist.com (March 1, 2000 - 2013)

I installed Live Mail Client some time ago, but have not as yet migrated my main Hotmail account over to it.
For that account I still use Outlook Express.
My old Hotmail account was grandfathered in without having to pony up an annual fee,
though I do sporadically get a pop up at launch that says "this service does not work with Outlook Express".
( I just ignore it, since OE still runs OK regardless of the bogus warning)
I have a LIVE.com, MSN.com and extra Hotmail.com account up and running using Live Mail client.
BTW : None of these would work in OE without first paying an annual fee.
When I first installed the new email client it managed to hide my Outlook Express installation.
I had to go into the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs section to reactivate it. Fortunately all my messages returned intact.
With Live Mail Client, I had to fidget with the options to get rid of a right hand column that is really an annoying google type ad bar.
Live mail has about 3 diferent ways of sending images with your mail.
You can simply attach it.
You can send it as a thumbnail.
You can send it as an "inline" image that can be manually resized.
It can off-load larger image files to a Microsoft website and
just send thumbnails.
When the receiver clicks on the thumbnail, a web page opens with a downloadable larger image.
Included with the email is a tag line warning that the larger image is available for only 30 days.
Overall a nice feature for a dialup user who wants to send bulky image files.
To turn this feature on one has to go to:
Tools> options> send> and (checkmark) "Upload larger images to the Web when sending photo email"

OG1, what do you like most about the Windows Live Mail Client. Is it much better than OE?
guest8z8, thanks for the nice overview. Didn't Windows Live Mail Client automaticlly import your Hotmail account? Do you like it better than OE? _________________

It works. Also, handles http mail (Hotmail which Windows Mail does NOT)
OE works too but why stand in the way of progress? I use both OE and Windows Live Mail - NO problems!! |

Boz,
It is my understanding that the new client will not import your mail from OE unless you direct it to do so using a built-in import wizard.
I assume that one should be off-line and first do a manual import of files from OE and then synchronize with the web.
I have accumulated many messages in Outlook Express, and since I am very comfortable using OE, I am in no hurry to switch.
I also assume that if I were on-line and I setup my original account in the new client it would attempt to download everything in my Hotmail Inbox.
This would not be pretty since my dialup connection would require hours of patience to accomplish it.
Ever since Hotmail upped the size of the account, I have left most of my new mail on the server.
When accounts were small, OE made it easy to store files locally. Today that is not so important.
BTW: Initial setup with any MSN/LIVE/Hotmail account is very simple. No need to input server info, which is necessary for POP3 setup.
I still like OE and will keep it as long as I can. At some point I will move to the Vista OS and will probably use the WLM client then.
Some people have had problems with the transfer wizard, so again I am in no hurry to test my luck. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GPmPvl7kI0 ( you will likely need broadband to watch this )
I tried setting up a Gmail Imap account in WLM aka Windows Live Mail client,
and got an error message when I tried to synchronze it.
"Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCCD2"
Found the solution thanks to a YouTube tutorial created by Rich Menga,
who shows you exactly how to set up a Gmail IMAP account in WLM .
(Basically he shows you how to rename Gmail folders so they display and sync properly)
These are my notes from the video:
| Quote: | Gmail setup WLM IMAP
Outgoing Server SMTP.GMAIL.COM port 465 check SSL
Incoming Server IMAP.GMAIL.COM port 993 check SSL
secure password auth - NO authentication-YES
PROPERTIES >
"IMAP Root Folder Path" type in [Gmail]
"check for" - Check Mark
Check Mark - "Store Special folders on Imap server"
Change the following folder labels:
Sent items path > SENT
Drafts path > DRAFTS
Deleted path > TRASH
Junk path > SPAM |

My girlfriend's Dell PC came with Windows ME and an XP upgrade disc. When ME finally took a dump, I installed XP and upgraded to SP2. All fine, except: occasionally her Outlook Express dumps the contents of an email folder. No warning, no apparent problem - a time period of email disappears. Installing a backup folder doesn't help. Since there is no warning, she shuts down the computer and the current file becomes the backup. By the time the problem is noticed, it's too late.
I assume there is some corruption in OE. I installed Thunderbird for her, but it lacks some features.
Would a new install of Windows Live Mail be the solution? |

| Do NOT know. For Hotmail, they automatically delete some email based on date. I do not think it is corruption of files on OE. More likely corruption of your hard drive seeing it was originally installed with MS Win ME so it is a fairly old PC in relative terms. |
