Just got an email from Microsoft stating that they are ending Hotmail access with Outlook Express. I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has for those who were "grandfathered". | Quote: | Outlook Express Service Change
Dear Microsoft Outlook Express customer,
Thank you for using Microsoft® Outlook® Express. Our information indicates that you use Outlook Express to access a Windows Live™ Hotmail® e-mail account via a protocol called DAV (Distributed Authoring and Versioning protocol). DAV, like POP3 or IMAP, is the way that a mail client communicates with a web-based mail server.
As a valued customer, we want to provide advanced notice that as of June 30, 2008, Microsoft is disabling the DAV protocol and you will no longer be able to access your Hotmail Inbox via Outlook Express. As an alternative, we recommend that you download Windows Live Mail, a free desktop e-mail client that has the familiarity of Outlook Express and much more. This next generation of free e-mail software will allow you to easily manage multiple e-mail accounts—including Windows Live Hotmail, plus other e-mail accounts that support POP3/IMAP. Better yet, Windows Live Mail integrates well with other Windows Live services, and downloads in minutes. After you provide your user name and password, you will automatically be linked to your Hotmail account, providing continued access to your email and contacts.
We encourage you to download Windows Live Mail at http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview.
And, to make your transition smoother, we've provided answers to frequently asked questions below.
Again, thank you for your use of Outlook Express and we are confident that you'll be just as delighted with the new Windows Live Mail.
Your Windows Live Mail team |

For XP users, download Windows Live Mail and you can still use a mail client with Hotmail. However, Win 98se users cannot use Windows Live Mail so they must use hotmail via the web. |

| I was wondering if Thunderbird e-mail client might be a good replacement for Outlook Express especially for Win 98se users in order to use Hotmail via Pop3. |

I have been using OE and Hotmail for years, but have not yet received the letter telling me to migrate from OE to Live Mail client by June 30.
I already download the new Live mail client and set it up to work with some seldom used Hotmail and MSN accounts. The price you pay for using the free client is that your inbox gets "spammed" with ad messages from Microsoft.
I guess if I wish to continue using OE and Hotmail , I would have to buy a $20 "Plus" Hotmail subscription to enable Pop3.
Not something I am likely to do, since Hotmail wants me to use SMTP Port 25, which my dialup ISP blocks.
I could use a Gmail SMTP server I suppose.
Maybe its time to just switch to Gmail?
Here are Microsoft's OE Pop3 setup instructions (after you have paid them their annual fee).
| Quote: | Add your e-mail account to Microsoft Outlook Express
If you have a Windows Live Hotmail Plus subscription, you can use a POP3 (POP3, or Post Office Protocol 3, is a protocol that's used to retrieve e-mail from a mail server.) server to add your Windows Live Hotmail account to Microsoft Outlook Express and access messages there. If you download and install Windows Live Mail, you can add your Windows Live Hotmail account to Windows Live Mail and access your messages and contacts there.
Use a POP3 server to add your Windows Live Hotmail account to Outlook Express
In Outlook Express, on the Tools menu, click Accounts.
Click Add, and then click Mail.
Type your name, and then click Next.
Type your full Windows Live Hotmail e-mail address, and then click Next.
Enter the following information, and then click Next:
In the My incoming mail server is a box, click POP3.
In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server box, type pop3.live.com.
In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box, type smtp.live.com
Type the account name and the password for your Windows Live Hotmail account. Clear the Remember password check box unless you're the only person with access to the computer. Make sure that the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box isn't selected.
Click Next, and then click Finish.
In the Internet Accounts window, on the Mail tab, click the Windows Live Hotmail account that you added, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, under Server Port Numbers, enter the following information, and then click OK:
In the Incoming server (POP3) box, type 995.
In the Outgoing server (SMTP) box, type 25.
Under both Outgoing mail (SMTP) and Incoming mail (POP3), select the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box.
Click Close. |

| With gmail and other good alternatives (there are even ways to get Yahoo mail on your Outlook Express without paying the yearly fee), I'm not sure why Hotmail is trying to put themselves out of business. It's a free service, granted, and perhaps they really want to wean themselves from it. |

MS is delaying the disabling of DAV protocol via Outlook Express: | Quote: | Responding to Customer Feedback – Disabling DAV
Recently, many customers received notification regarding Microsoft’s plan to disable the DAV protocol, which allows you to access your Windows Live Hotmail inbox from Outlook Express. From the feedback we received, it became clear that you needed additional time to evaluate alternative solutions and with this in mind, we are postponing the transition deadline previously announced. This means that you will continue to be able to access your Windows Live Hotmail accounts from Outlook Express beyond the June 30 transition deadline... | Source: | Code: | | http://emailsupport.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!5D6F5A79A79B6708!5745.entry |
Also found this somewhere on the net - I forgot to copy the source url! | Quote: | Q: "I received an e-mail saying you are going to disable Outlook Express and I will no longer be able to receive my e-mail through it. Is this true?"
A: The Windows Live Hotmail team did e-mail some users, letting them know that Microsoft was planning to disable the DAV protocol that Outlook Express uses to access your Hotmail inbox. Many of you e-mailed us, expressing strong feelings on this matter, and we heard you loud and clear! The DAV protocol will NOT be discontinued at this time, and you can continue to use Outlook Express beyond the June 30 transition deadline previously announced. The Hotmail team will provide an update in the coming months. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. |
