Oops, i omitted mentioned of Skipstone. I find it faster than Mozilla. It has promise. I hope they keep this browser simple. They shouldn't mess around with it, as being done to FireFox.

On a side note, Firefox is one of those promising products that will probably never fulfill its potential as a viable alternative brower because developers screwed around with it-messing around more as newer releases come out. There has been too much expermentation.

A question about BeOS: Can it be run on an AMD processor? I have feeling it can not....I am eager to try that GUI...but do not want to screw anything up.

Yes supposedly it can run on AMD but requires a special patch. Ok, here is link to AMD patches, both one for K-6 and ones for athlon.  http://www.bebits.com/search?search=amd&x=31&y=11

The MAX updated cd contains all patches and drivers, thats why I asked which version of BeOS you had. It can be a PITA to piecemeal the patches and drivers, but its doable if you keep at it. When I started playing with BeOS, it was just the old free download that will install and run within a windows file. I had to add drivers and patches that I needed. However from there it has an installer that can copy and expand that file into a partition of its own. BeOS is rather remarkable once you get to playing with it. You just have to remember that BeOS R5 is contemporary with win95B. Its still impressive today but is limited in support of things like java and dvds that werent important back then. Patches to make it work with Athalon and ports of modern versions of Mozilla and Firefox and other such things are done by small group of dedicated volunteers.

I havent read WIRED article but had heard UNIX is going after linux distributions. They are pushing into M$ market share but I think are really decimating UNIX's share.

Skipstone is an independently developed frontend for Mozilla so Mozilla people dont controll it or how it developes.
It is meant to just install and use already present files from a full Mozilla installation like the many frontends for IE under windows. However the developer of Puppy wanted to keep his distribution small so he used Skipstone, but just added the actual files from Mozilla that Skipstone needs to function, leaving off any extra Mozilla bloat. By the way on previous versions of Puppy he had old Mozilla 0.98 which you could actually use as standalone, but he also included a different frontend called "Light". I think Light may be defunct. I couldnt find a website for it. It makes Skipstone look downright decadent.

I had the latest BeOS which was downloaded from their web page. It is one that has all the updates. Thank you for the link for Athlon CPUs. I am going to screw around with it on the weekend.

This is the distro of BeOS I possessed. It was cloned to CD a couple of weeks ago. I will play around with it over the weekend. For certain, I will let you know how it pans out.

I am trying BeOS. It is an excellent OS.

The latest BeOS, serial 5.03 was downloaded. It autodetected sound and graphics card easily. Getting on the internet was bit of challenge, but was successfully conducted through my LAN.

This OS is a keeper. At least no hackers, viruses, or the intrusiveness of Windows XP are absent, for now....

Nope, just heard about this from your posts today. The World of Free OS is like a HUGE ocean. Not possible to know everything. One is constantly surprised.

Mandrake Linux has just won a major contract for all the French Govt. PCs by the French Govt. If this goes good then several other Govts. can be expected to follow suite resulting in a spike in Linux demand/use and the number of free OSs.

About half of the German provincial governments are using some form of Linux. A lot of city governments, especially those in Bayern had switched to a Linux-GNU platform a couple of years ago. I know someone who works for the city of Köln, and she said they just switched over to a Debian form of Linux, and they liked it a lot.

I had mentioned I think installing xandros and mepis earlier in this thread. Xandros uses LILO bootloader and mepis uses GRUB. I tend to prefer grub but Xandros is very insistant on LILO. Grub wont automatically see xandros. LILO did see Mepis. Even a forum of xandros users tend to promote either using LILO exclusively or at least chaining the two so when Grub boots xandros it actually then calls LILO which then gives a second menu to actually boot Xandros. Just what we all need, more buttons to push.

Took me forever to find how to boot Xandros directly from Grub. I had figured everything except the initrd line. Other distributions dont seem to need that.

Here is sample grub paragraph you can put in your grub.conf file to boot xandros directly (change hardrive and partitions to what you have on your system):

Title Xandros
root (hd0,3)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.24-x1 root=/dev/hda4 auto rw acpi=on
initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.24-x1.gz

Booting directly from grub bypasses the xandros splash screen so meaningless error warnings about missing modules will appear as xandros boots.

One more thing. Xandros fights back and will reinstall LILO automatically unless you rename a file: "/sbin/lilo.real" to something else. I renamed mine to "/sbin/lilo.unreal".

All this was a bit of a pain to figure out, but hey I am now a lot more knowlegable about grub and how it works. When something is automatically installed and works fine, you just dont pay much attention to it.

Great thread - finally, something I can bite into and chew on to get started in my Linux meanderings.

Thanks a lot every one, and a Big Thumbs Up for the info posted here - esp. the LFS site!

You are welcome. Hope you get started early. Try the more easier distros first such as Vector Linux and Knoppix. Also see the sticky Linux thread here at this forum on top.

Also, I read your other post that you are in your 30s, decided to be single but are happy about your decision. This is excellent wish more people were responsible this way.

(OT reply to Vijay)

To clarify, I haven' decided to stay single all my life - I am just happy with my situation as I have not found "the one".

Peace and sanity are at the top of my list in relationships, and finding someone who is not going to irritate me and who I will not irritate in return (I tend to have strong opinions, and I bolster these opinions with facts and information, as I read a lot and quickly delve through information and sift out the pertinent details - a gift from god, what can I say) before I will make a commitment.

But, there is a lot more to the story as well, that I have not mentioned. I should say that I have not found "the one" and been able to keep her either. But running around moping about it is not going to help.
