I'm having trouble gaining newsgroup access with Access4less....other people have been referred to this 2001 message:
Posted: 23 Aug 2003 19:24 Post subject: Access4Less New News Server
The news server address for PREFERRED: news.acess4less.net
If you are dialing into a A4L PREFERRED # you can read news with out having to use News Server authentication.
The news server address for NON-PREFERRED: news2.acess4less.net
If you are dialing into a non-preferred # please use:
username:
password: your dialup password
The new news server have 1000's more posts per topic. The old server only held few 100's.
Which is followed by this 2003 message:
Hawk and its cousins - Joi, Access4Less, and Access-4-Free - all have their newsgroups up and running again. The old servers still won't allow you to retrieve newsgroup lists or posts, but the new ones do seem to work decently.
The new server addresses are news2.emaildomain. For example, news2.aaahawk.com, news2.joimail.com, etc. There's also a change in the authentication. Instead of just using your dial-in username, you have to use dialin-username@emaildomain.
In the first Access4less is spelled Acess4less. Is that the misspelled one the correct one?
I have tried all these configurations and nothing seems to work. Could someone help?
Thanks, Lonnie |

| I use the preferred phone numbers with news2.acess4less.net (the correct spelling is without the second c). With that news server, I use the use News Server authentication (un/pw). I have never been able to connect to news.acess4less.net. |

(I posted above without registering. Reposting below If admin wants to delete above please do so) - done - Jason
[EDIT 4/24/04 - usernames must be entered as:
username@access4less.net]
These work for me as of today (4/23/04):
On preferred numbers:
news.access4less.net
(must logon with username / password)
On non-preferred numbers:
news2.access4less.net
(must logon with username / password)
You can use the news2 on both non-preferred and preferred #s. The news can only be used on preferred #s. I've used both ways of getting newsgroup and I don't see a difference between the 2.
BTW the service access4less uses has very good retention. (I can't think of the name of that service off the top of my head - if I can figure it out I'll edit this post).

Thanks for your help!
In the first one you have news.access4less.cnet
cnet I'm sure was a typing error...also you left the second c...is that correct?
I've tried these different combinations and still haven't gained access.
I'm beginning to feel like a newby all over again. |

Correct, it's a typing error. Thanks for pointing it out - I edited my post to fix it.
The only other thing I can suggest is don't forget configure your server options to "require log in." I think most require you to put a check mark in that box (and you need to have your username with @access4less.net at the end and your password)
Good luck. If there is any specific program you are having problems with post more details. |

It didn't when I last tried it with a NON-preferred number.
I just checked every single A4L dial-up number in my city - Atlanta (and there is a ton of them) is a Preferred number (with an * against it).
However I have kept a couple of old (and now UNlisted) numbers which were NON-preferred back in August/2003 - in Sept/2003 they were no longer listed - I'll try those next time I dial in.
Update: Just re-dialed -in with the old previously NON-preferred number - and news. fails authentication with this message:
Error reported by Server: 502 no permission for <ip address>
whereas - news2. will log-on fine.
Just as a double check I dialed-in on my regular (preferred) number and news. has got me to newsgroups fine. _________________ Vincent

Could someone tell me the difference between preferred #'s and non-preferred #'s and where I could find these various #'s listed for access4less.net?

| Go to the access4less website, click on access numbers, put in either your state, area code or city in the box (make sure the current item is chosen in the drop down box) and when your particular list comes up, the preferred numbers will have a * after the city. |
