I have this program which supposedly encrypts files on that really secure 128 bit platform thingy. Works fine, but problem is if you transfer the encypted file to another computer, you also need to install the program on that computer as well to open it.
Since I dont want to have to carry aound and install this program wherever I go, does anybody know of a solid ecrypter that can secure a file (or folder even) into like an .exe or other universal extension where I can open it on pretty much any Windows computer? In the past Ive used a zip type program that creates a .exe extension with password protection, but I dont think its really that secure. Thank you. |

seagull369,
Two programs come to mind for this. One is Scramdisk, version 3.01r3. This has bee replaced by Drivecrypt, but is still available. http://www.samsimpson.com/cryptography/scramdisk/ still has it. I can be installed on a floppy and used in what would be called "traveler mode". It is good. The other is a version of PGP that can make the encrypted archives. The version is PGP6.5.8ckt08. Only the ckt version has this. Can be downloaded at
ftp://ftp.hacktic.nl/pub/crypto/pgp/pgp60/...8ckt08.zip . This is the download link. Can be hard to find.

| Password protecting and encrypting are two different things. If you are able to decrypt on any computer without using any type of "program" then that defeats the security. Use a form of public/private key encryption like PGP or G/PGP. |

The scramdisk program can make container files that can be kept on floppies or possibly CDs. The entire program also fits on a single floppy, requiring no other installation. The version of PGP I mentioned, in addition to making encrypted container files on the system it's installed on, also can encrypt documents, programs, or entire folders, and convert them into self decrypting archives. These are password protected and can be put on disks, CDs, or e-mailed. It's not as strong as standard PGP, but will defeat the average user.
