Freelane is back but with less dialup numbers (none in the 518 area code) I quickly uninstalled it and went to a pay ISP (at least the phone call is free.)

Freelane will stay in service in the US but they won't provide service in Canada. Download their new software today before the old service stops working.

Yes, Netzero used to be great, as many have testified, but with their success they have changed for the worst. The list of gripes is interminable.

- For starters, every five to fifteen minutes you must click OK in a pop-up alert window, or you will be disconnected. There are also pointless pop-up alerts that contain dialogue to the effect of "Did you know there's an ad bar on your screen that you can click?" NO SHEET, SHERLOCK. I can barely read the alert box because of it! Even so, at first this seemed a welcome change from their requirement of clicking banners in the ad bar which often spawned a stream of new browser windows. However...you get those anyway as well. I haven't been able to determine if the random new browser windows (which contain ads, of course) are triggered by clicking links, opening a new window, a certain span of time, or a certain percentage of bandwidth used. Regardless, your monitor is constantly interrupted by pop-ups of varying sizes.

- The "ZeroPort" Java applet. This thing is the bane of my online existence. It drags my computer usage to unbearable slowness at times (unacceptable on a P-III 500 with 128MB RAM), is ALWAYS on top of your screen no matter what application you're using (including non-internet-related programs--goodbye, multi-tasking), has a confusing interface with poor click-detection (probably intentional and designed to get you to inadvertently click on ads), and most offensively, causes innumerable display and system crashes. I used to see Windows blue screens once a month at most. Now I see them and must manually reboot DAILY. Furthermore, while you're online, the ZeroPort is downloading multi-megabyte ad movies (i.e., actual commercials) to play during the log-on process.

- Connection. Even if I maintain my good humor and dutifully click whatever pop-ups they throw at me, Netzero still disconnects me randomly and is often unavailable to reconnect for a good hour afterward. (In fairness, I'm dialing from Queens, NY.)

- Email. Free POP/SMTP, but all outgoing mail is appended with several lines of text ads. One workaround for this is to send mail in HTML format rather than plain text.

- Privacy. Netzero monitors your internet activity through the Zeroport. Yet another unsettling item on the laundry list of grievances.

- Speed. As aforemetioned, the memory-eating Java ad bar, continual pop-up windows, background downloading of commercials, and generally poor overall download/upload rates (as others have complained, I have also been unable to transfer at more than 2-3 KBps) all amount to a tedious, disruptive, and frustrating internet experience.

In sum: I advise you to avoid Netzero at all costs. Literally. I personally cannot WAIT to PAY for my forthcoming cable connection. If you must, go ahead and download the 4-ish MB app and experience the Netzero headache for yourself. You're infinitely better off finding a cheap, independent, local ISP and shelling out a hundred bucks a year for peerlessly smooth, serene access.

Thank you for reading. No thanks to Nutzorro. You guys owe me a bottle of ibuprofen.

I was happily using Juno until 1st UP went under so I had to switch. NetZero looked good, but I have been getting screen freezes and illegal operation warnings too frequently when I am using NetZero-I am searching for a new free ISP to use-any suggestions-the AMEX free ISP looks good but you have to be a member-any suggestions?

I had use Netzero for 1/2 Year. My experiences about this free isp is very good after I upgrade my computer's RAM to 256MB, since the Java codes eat lots of memory.

If you are thinking of getting a free internet service, think again, and for god's sake don't use Netzero. I have been a netzero user for about 6 months. Back then, it was, I venture to say, good. Boy, have they changed! Now, new banners pop up all the time, and if you try to close them, they just pop up again! But the worst is the 30 second "window of opportunity" to keep your connetcion. Just try donwloading a lot of emails with this running! I tried this with several MBytes of mail; I succeeded in getting a couple downloaded, but every time, it would log me off before completing all of them. Then when I tried again, it started at the beginning again, and I was stuck in an endless loop - no more email. I am going to pay for my next provider!

netzero is one of the worst!! there is always a banner that is reloading and it is always downloading a movie(an advertisement) when you are online. If you are looking for a faster free isp then you do not want to pick net zero! I also play an online game (TFC) and if I try to run TFC when I am using netzero it will shut down and log me offline. The only good thing about netzero is that you will usuly never have problems with connecting.

It's one of the worst free ISPs if you have Windows Me. It's not compatible with Windows Me, and possibly not with any Windows. After about 1-2 hours using it, it starts spinning the hard drive more and more and more. After 3 or 4 hours, everything you do (click the Start button, switch windows, Go to a web site, etc.) causes endless hard drive spinning and works at a snail's pace. The hard drive won't work properly again until you close Netzero, and you may have to restart your computer.

Try downloading a program called Stay Connected. They have an option for Net Zero.

I had been using Net0 since it came out. It was much better then, now that they are getting bigger, advertising on television and getting to hot for their own good, the hell with us. I use to be able to upload or download and walk away from the puter while doing this, NO MORE..if you miss clicking on the pop up window, you only have a few seconds (if you see it) then you get disconnected.I have better things to do than sit here on click on their adds. I am looking for a new server now, I know we get what we pay for, but I always heard the internet was free before the government starting seeing big$$'s in it...what ablout us non-government blue collar people that want to stay home and surf the web..Give the internet back to the people!!

I really hate to share this with anyone, but now that the trick doesnt work as well, I guess what the heck. First off, NetZero, in my experience, was semi-reliable and I always got good connections. It is GREAT for gaming, beats the hell out of most pay ISPs. But, it's only good ad-free. How to do this? Simple: Email me and I will send you a zip file with instructions and the files needed. No catch. Why? Because NetZero recently installed a program that checks the activity of the ZeroPort program. The connection is still good and ad-free but you may have to create new accounts once in a while as they delete the inactive ones (the ones that don't run ZeroPort). They also might kick you off, but that so far has only happened to me twice.

Good Luck...

Post  Title: Would not disconnect

Joe
Guest
I am currently using a paid ISP and I am very satisfied with their service, but I would like to have a free ISP as a backup. I am also connecting to AOL through my ISP at a reduced rate. I heard about NetZero from someone I work with and he said it was a good service. I recently downloaded it and wanted to try it out. I was able to connect with no problem even though it was slow. I was also able to connect to AOL using NetZero with no problem. Then I disconnected from AOL with no problem. When I tried to disconnect from NetZero I got the "Blue Screen of Death". In order to disconnect and get rid of the Blue Screen I had to do a cold boot of my computer. I was not on long enough to receive the message to stay logged on. I was only testing it. After that test I decided to remove NetZero from my system and stay with my paid ISP for now.

I've found that NetZero is better than other free ISPs. It doesn't disconnect you even after hours of use, and even during the holiday season. It has been unavailable sometimes on the first few tries, but when it connects it is fast and reliable. Some disadvantages: You must click a popup window every 30-60 minutes with a 60 second timer on it, so you can't leave it unattended during long downloads unless you have Stay Connected, which is the only utility I've found to be compatible with NetZero.

When I first signed up with Net Zero, it was great. Then they changed somthin. I can't even sign on with them. It got deleted, along with Alta Vista, who would not recognize my password, within five minutes of my registration.
