I am a former ev1 email customer and wanted to retain my ev1 email address so I opted to stay with peoplepc. However, I have not received my ev1 emails and they are bouncing. I have contacted peoplepc in India five times. I have even spoken with a supervisor twice. One rep hung up on me because he didn't know how to fix it, another one told me to call ev1 after 12/4. Twice they told me a supervisor would call me back. Never happened. I am going to cancel the service. I am sorry ev1 sold this to peoplepc.

but received a bill anyway. After 3 calls to India and an email to EV1 and PPLPC (prolly in India), they finally agreed to cancel without charging me.

Persistence pays off. Devilish

I wrote a review of these guys a while back saying I was pleased with the service for the most part although my connection would get dropped from time to time. I had People PC for something like 5 years and was billed exactly $10.95/mo. Although they have no free cust service, I accepted that as part of the deal with such a cheap provider.

Last month, I upgraded to DSL and therefore had to drop these guys. I was scared after reading some of the horror stories, but they agreed to drop me and stopped billing immediatly. Here's what you do:

Call 888-587-9669 during regular business hours and ask to disconnect your service. You may be on hold for a while. If all goes well, you'll have to wait on the line while they obtain a cancellation number. If you don't get that number, your service will still be active.

Write down that number and send a follow-up letter to PPC at P.O 26909 San Francisco 94126-0909. Reference your account name and the cancellation number in the letter.

I was happy the way this turned out, thought I'd give a thumbs-up to PPC and also help out the next guy.

Oh, and a word on DSL. the speed they quote is maximum download. I've never ever reached it, but it is pretty darn quick. Also, the provider (in my case QWEST), is subject to all sorts of taxes and stuff, so keep that in mind when crunching numbers.

I have been forced into peoplepc by ev1 so I won't lose emails. After following their install instructions, I cannot connect to the internet. Customer service is in India. The first rep hung up on me. The second rep I got frustrated with and now have to seek help from relatives. And guess what....I can't get my emails anyway.

I signed up to PeoplePC for 5 months at $49.95 before my DSLExtreme subscription expired, and asked them to mail the disc as my download speeds were very slow (one of the reasons for giving up DSLExtreme. They never mailed the disc for a month and I decided to sign up with SBC/Yahoo for DSL and contacted PeoplePC to tell them I had never received the disc and wanted a refund. THEY REFUSED EVEN THOUGH I HAD NEVER LOGGED ON TO USE THE SERVICE! Even Discover Card failed to back me on the refund because they said PeoplePC had a screen shot of me accepting their no-refund policy. Big deal, anybody can have a hidden no-refund policy, but they have to deliver something before it should even come into play. PEOPLEPC IS A MAJOR-LEAGUE RIPOFF!

After reaching the end of my patience trying to contact People PC customer service due to problems with their Internet Security Pack and getting the runaround many times I searched the internet for other people's opinions about them. It seems they make a habit of screwing over their customers. Why don't we do something?
I'm ready to take the initiative and contact the FTC, state (Oregon)attorney general and a lawyer interested in initiating a class action suit.
If you are serious about making People PC accountable for their actions, please send me an email. If there is enough of a response I will contact an attorney and discuss taking action.
I won't bother you with emails unless there's enough of a response.

Post  Title: How I just cancelled People PC

Quirk3

I've finally gotten through to cancel People PC after receiving the same "I'm sorry People PC is presently experiencing high volume of calls and cannot take your call. Please call back later" message numerous times.

This how I just got it cancelled.

Call 888-587-9669

Listen to options and click 1 (for current customer)

Listen to options and click 3 ( cancelling account)

Listen to the message "I'm sorry due to high volume of calls, People PC cannot take your call now. Please call back later." message. AND STAY ON THE LINE.....DON'T HANG UP

....the message will continue " If you are cancelling due to technical reasons ....we have good news. People PC is offering free technical support..........If you would like technical support press 1.......otherwise press 2. "

Press 2. You will get a live person.

__________

I hope this helps. It took me about 15 minutes of explaining my reasons for cancelling over and over and over ....and I heard a lot of offers for free months etc, which were all very enticing but I persevered and thank God it worked. I got a cancellation number and they said they would email me confirmation notice.

Be prepared with your information. And be prepared to be extraordinarily patient. No company likes to lose business and internet providers are ruthless in their attempts to keep you as a customer.
____________

In all fairness the support person mentioned that she could see that I had not activated all the features of People PC and wondered if the decision to cancel would not be altered by some technical tweaks. And perhaps this is true. However I was using this account to help a relative get familiar with her People PC account and now it was not necessary to maintain the extra expense for my own account.

Hope this helps some of you.

I 'maybe' just cancelled my account at 11AM on a Tuesday. Called the number, on hold about 15 minutes, with the warning messages about high volume, etc. If you wait long enough, they do give you an e-mail and snail mail address you can purportedly cancel from.

The american-sounding representative started reading a script when I said I wanted to cancel, telling me I could have technical support, blah, blah. I kept repeating, 'I want to cancel, I want to cancel' like a mantra continously, which stopped his script. He told me I was rude and put me on hold to get me a confirmation number for the cancellation! Waited 10 minutes this time (I think he was hoping I'd hang up). Got a cancellation number, but I don't trust him, so I also sent an e-mail to address given, with the confirmation number asking them to check whether it was really cancelled.

Just TRY cancelling at "any time" and tell me how THAT goes!
You CAN"T.
I've been trying to cancel for weeks and weeks!

They won't answer the phone! They disconnect your call.
There's a message that tells you there's a high volume of calls...
then they disconnect you.
There's a message that tells you they are experiencing a power outtage, then they disconnect you.
There's a message that tells you to call back in an hour, and that they are currently unable to assist you...
then they disconnect you.
You call back in an hour and you get the same message..
and then, they disconnect you.
and,..IF YOU TRY AS I DID,and call tech support to assist, they will put you right through to members services...BUT THEN PUT YOU ON HOLD FOREVER...until you give up and hang up.

Deborah, you CAN'T cancel your account anytime you want.
They won't let you.
Evil Evil Mad Mad exclaim

PeoplePC is the absolute worst! My modem is going schizoid, and when I try to log on, I get the 'unable to detect dial tone' message..well, duh! , my telephone is working just fine! So, when I contacted PPC for help, the tech support line doesn't answer. I try again, same thing. So, okay, I email, and I beg them to provide me with a working tech support number..I know I probably only have to add some initialization strings or re-configure my settings....their email reply is a carbon copy of the 'is your phone line plugged in properly' load of crap...even to the point of saying, 'you get this error message because your modem cannot detect a dial tone'..how lame!..okay, so I email back and demand they cancel my account due to lack of assistance with my connection problem. They email me again WITH THE SAME RESPONSE AS THE FIRST TIME!., which is no help at all. So, this time, I call their PPC MBRS number to cancel and I get that dumb 'high volume' of calls message...then, when I call AGAIN, the message tells me they have a power outage, and that I should call another day! I had to contact my bank directly to stop the automatic payment and for a stupid $10.95 bill the bank charged me $25.00. Okay, that last part is NOT PPC's fault, but their refusal to cancel my account either via email or phone IS. That's the end.

Even though People PC pretty much screwed over my system with the pop ups and the lame fire wall that they offer. I decided to go ahead and let the 6 month contract run out and figured that it would cancel then. Well as you can see they *** every last penny out of people, so of course it didn't. So I called to cancel my service, after being on hold for well...EVER, they said that it was not a problem. Figuring that it was not that big of a deal I didn't check my back account. Well when I did a month later there was a charge. "SURPRISE" So since calling did not work I figured that maybe I could try email....NOPE they said I have to call...Hummm Cause that worked so well the last time. Being that I work the same hours that they are open it was hard to find time to call, but seeing as they usually charge my card on the 7th I tried to call and cancel it today the 5th. They told me that they had nothing on record of me trying to cancel my service ever so a refund would not be possible. I told them that since I would be canceling my service again today I did not want my card charged on the 7th. She politely told me that I was just out of luck cause that was already in the paper work to be charged. Nice Right!! I am mad about the 60 dollars that they have charged me since my contract was up, but all I was asking for is that my card not be charged again. But I guess I am SOL!! I will never use this service or any service affiliated with them again. And I would hope that the people on here who think that People PC is the greatest open their eyes! I hope that it don't take till they go to cancel their service to realize they are scamming so many people....

Too bad it's not as easy to get out as it was to get signed up. PeoplePC has a very AOL-esque cancellation process. I'm not sure I believe that overwhelming number of calls routine. Just another way of getting you to put off your cancellation untill another day.

This is a review based upon my sister's experiences with PeoplePC as she told me. She signed up after receiving the CD in the mail because of poor service from a local isp. The price wasn't a major concern because it's cheaper than her previous isp. The easy setup was a plus, as was the payment method. There was only 1 local number but no problems have been encountered and always rock solid connections. The idle and session timeouts are useful things which only upset her teenage daughter who chats and idles a lot and hates being kicked offline while waiting for an "important" IM. Grin None of the family uses the e-mail so no current comments on it (I used it and had no problems at all).

PeoplePC is changing the present local number (apparently dropping Qwest) and adding 4 others in the calling area - so that's a plus! All in all the family is very pleased with this isp (as was I, when I used them some time ago).

If asked, I probably would have recommended some other ISP - only for price, but PeoplePC is a very good isp and much better than others I, and my sister's family have used! Neither of us had any need to contact customer service. She is a currently pleased customer and I am a pleased former customer who only dropped them because I could save $'s. So this review gives PeoplePC - 2 thumbs up Thumb Up Thumb Up

After a horrendus hour on trying to get through to People PC, I decided to call Earthlink's main number direct (1.4048150770) and as usual, I get their voice mail, but after listening to their menu crap, I finally got through to their customer service line. I asked to talk to the main supervisor for their customer service and actually talked to a non-foreigner and explained to him what the situation was. If you are cancelling their service, usually when you get your cancellation number, you are going to assume that your service is deactivated. This guy saw the date on the cancellation along with the number and then appologized to me. Not only that, they are sending us a check for the service that we did not use when we canceled the service. Apparently this supervisor was on the same level with me and told me that he will bring this up to their board and to have their foreigners re-trained and to be taught on how to un-check the service activation and to make sure that customers dont get further billing. He is also going to request that when cancellation numbers are given out to the customers, the next thing that the tech will see is a pop-up asking to de-activate the service. I then asked him if he is planning on staying with them for very long, and he too told me that he does not like the way that the comany is running and will be going to go work for another isp that deals with broadband. Stumped, I asked him why. He did admit that he hates their dial-up and went behind their back (and breaking company policy) and ordered DSL. I then jokingly asked him who's going to cancel his service, and he said that he is going to do it himself and to delete everything of his account off of their records.

so if you are cancelling people pc, and after you get your cancellation number, ALWAYS ask them to make sure that your service is deactivated. I hope that this helps, and the number above is to Earthlink and you just tell them that you know that People PC is owned by them and that they can bring up your people pc account up on their computers. Another hint to know if they are going to totally deactivate your service, they will ask you for your answer to your security question.

My internet service was with my phone company and then my phone company didn't provide internet service anymore so they switched me to People PC at the same cost. I thought no problem. Well, the first month I got billed for my internet service from People PC and from the phone company. I paid the phone company and then I realized I was billed twice. I also paid People PC not realizing that I was being billed double. Then a month later I realized this and called People PC after they billed me for the next month. They said, ok you should not be billed twice. We will credit your account and put down that you owe nothing. Well a few days later my internet service was disconnected because of I didn't pay my bill. It happened on a weekend, so I couldn't call until Monday. I had to explain the situation all over again that I was transferred over to People PC from my phone company and I was being billed twice for the same service. The guy I talked with said, ok we will connect you back up again and give you next month's free because of the disconnection. Well, next month came and I got a bill from them. I didn't pay it cause the guy said the month would be free. A few days later my service was disconnected cause I did not pay my bill. So again I called and explained everything and again they said ok; we will connect you back up and give you next month free. Then this happened again the 3rd month.
which is where I am with them now on the free month. But, I am going to switch internet services cause I don't think they ever had any intentions of giving me a free month after disconnecting me through no fault of my own and for having me to pay double. That was very disruptive for me to have my internet service cut off for days 3 times when I did nothing to have it cut off. They told me 3 times that I would be getting the next month free without any interruptions of course. And all 3 times, they were LYING. They sure are giving themselves a bad reputation. I am going to find myself another internet service that charges as little as they do (there are others around) even though everything is cleared up with my account now. I do not want anything to do with a crooked and deceitful company. I wonder if these people I was talking with just did not understand English and just acted like they knew what I was saying. They kept saying though I am so sorry for your inconvenience. I know, things like this happen not on purpose. But, 3 times; month after month. No way.

I totally agree---those people from India or Pakistan....with terrible accents, it is so hard to understand and to communicate with them, not only is it hard to understand what they are saying, clearly they cannot understand what Americans are saying too....

also a little know fact...India has some of the rudest people in the world

I have tried to disconnect with peoplepc for over a week and every time I call I get an automated message that they are experiencing an overload of calls at that time and get disconnected. Now I called tech support to speak to a human, and of course, they cannot do anything to help me, but tell me to call during the week. I have been billed for the next month's service and I will be responsible to pay for another months' service though I no longer require those services as I have upgraded to a broadband isp
