Post  Title: not a good isp anymore!

CollateralDamage

I have been a customer of TotalUSA for more than 3 years. It started off as a very good ISP with many access numbers local to me and with very good connection speeds always above 50K.

Over the past year, they have been having access number changes. Many of them. What was once many access numbers for me has dwindled down to a few and the connections are not good. Many times they try and connect me at 26K. I have had a few bouts with the error 691 username/password invalid. And it always happens when they are no longer there to contact. Lots of disconnects now, too.

If you look through some of the other cheap ISP's you will see that TotalUSA and many others share the same connection numbers for your area. I don't know if this has always been the case.

All I know now is that the connect speeds are bad if you can even connect (busy signals), there are a lot of disconnects even in the middle of downloading, and there aren't that many access numbers anymore. I'm here writing this review because I am looking for a new ISP on this site. I called complaining about the slow connects and the guy told me to just redo my connection (which I already did; no difference). No help. And it's not my line because my other ISP still connects fine with excellent connect speeds. It's them and their overused network and numbers.

I think you can do better than this one.

After 6 mos of use...

Even less connection problems than earlier. Over the past month or 2 there were not any times when I had to make multiple connection attempts. Also did not get idle timed out any earlier than the 45 min. With Dialup.cc and Fry's, there were not supposed to have been idle timeouts. But eventually, whether a result of the isp or the network carrier they use, I started to get regular 10 min timeouts.

CS with this isp is among the best I've seen. Much quicker email response than I saw with Dialup.cc. With it, CS could take a week to reply. With Total USA I've had same day response. Cancellation painless. I've read horror stories here on Freedomlist about cancellation difficulties and continued billing with some other isps.

This isp has been in business for many yrs. I subscribed to the 3 mo plan which comes to just $7.99 a mo. For just a few $ more a mo you get better CS than I've seen with some and with the option not to give out cc info as they also offer the option to receive mailed statements payable by check or cc. Whatever billing and payment way you prefer, online payment, mail, check, cc.

There may be a lower priced one which would be suitable. But all in all, not a bad isp.

Just an update after using this ISP now for a couple of months...

There have been a few times I've had trouble connecting but that's in a total of 2 months. And maybe twice or so in that time I've been disconnected before the idle timeout. They do adhere strictly to the 45 min idle timeout. All in all not bad I guess for the price. I only paid $9.99 for 3 mos. The 45 min idle is longer than many. And as previously posted, I've found their email response to be prompt.

Overall not perfect but not bad.

Mad I've had (and have had it with) this ISP for over a year. At times, it won't recognize me for hours on end and then suddenly, Oh ya...we know who you are now. Hookup speeds can be everywhere from 16k to 50k. It's all the fault of my new computer, the phone lines, sun spots, the heartbreak of psoriasis or maybe even hemorroids! Everything but TotalUSA! If you live east of the mountains, you'll wait half of the day to talk to them.

This is cheap but cheap is what you'll get.

Re-trying them with their 3 months for $9.99 offer after I started getting timed out in 10 minutes while with my previous isp, Dialup.cc. 45 min seems much more workable. Grin

Sign-up/set-up with Total USA.net was a breeze. And I previously had quick (within 3 hrs.) email response from them compared to 4 - 7 days with my previous provider.

Not using a TotalUSA email account this time. But I did see it can take 24 hours for an email account to be set-up. Hense perhaps why mine didn't work the last time I tried them.

Connections speeds have been better than my previous isp. Haven't had anything under 40s Kbps even with my lines. My previous would sometimes be in the 30s.

So far so good.

BTW, the real rate is $9.99 UNLESS you pay for THREE MONTHS at a time - $23.97 ($7.99).  www.totalcallusa.com  only charges $5.95 per month!!!

When you posted this was not a good isp I didn't realize you only meant the name.

Actually $7.99 isn't bad compared to slightly cheaper isps for the prompt support, number of access numbers, and the fact they've been in business for many years. However after setting them up, the webmail was inaccessible. I will say they already voided my charge without any problem.

None. Jyst the close name. If you want to pay $7.99, that is fine.

OG1, reviews here seem mixed. But... 300 hrs. for $3.33/mo. promo for 3 mos. and then $7.99/mo. 45 min idle timeout. Free support which responded to me in less than 3 hrs. by email. A large number of access numbers (for me 12). Cancellations by email, site form, or phone. Nothing there appears all that awful. What's your gripe with 'em?

Sorry, NO. Awfully confusing. TotalUSA is a ripoff of TotalCallUSA. Looks lkie the thread is for TotalUSA which is not a good ISP.

Is this even the same company?

TotalUSA.net along with pcu.net is part of PC's Unlimited with a Logan UT address.

The link above leads me to a site with LA headquarters.

I signed up with TotalUSA.net back in Feb 2006 after my other ISP, 1internet.us was sold and abruptly cut me off in the middle of the month because I exceeded some new online time limit. Of course 1internet never notified me about the change. Anyway, my experience with TotalUSA.net has been excellent. Online signup was easy. After signup, they billed my credit card the $9.99 signup offer ($3.33 a month for 3 months). The webpage says you get the first 3 months for only $3.33/month so I assumed I would be immediately charged $9.99. Some people seem upset that they were not charged $3.33, but it seems self explanatory to me that they are going to charge you $9.99. After 3 months, they automatically charge you $23.97 for another 3 months. I was a little surprised at the automatic 3 month renewal, but it is cheaper renewing for 3 months at a time, so I am cool with it.

I have never been down with them. I have crappy phone lines, so I can never connect faster than 33.6...but this is the normal speed for any ISP I use. Email seems to work fine, although I don't send or receive a lot of email with them. I use alternate free email providers and send thru other SMTP servers with no problem. Being able to do this with TotalUSA is a big plus for me...I don't like when ISPs block other outgoing mail servers. It would be nice if TotalUSA offered more than 2 email addresses, but this is not a big deal for me.

Overall, I am pleased with them for the money. They do not complain if you are online a lot (and I am talking a lot), they are cheap, and they do not seem to block Port 25 for outgoing mail.

I've had these guys since September with little problems over all. Less problems than I had with AOL. I cancelled service in December when I picked up something that destroyed my system and I didn't know how long until I'd be back up and running. I called 4 days later and reinstated my account. Last week they just got around to cancelling my account based on my first call in December to cancel with no record of my reinstating this account. I prepaid this account for one year and I have no refund as of yet and also no account availabilty. I wouldn't recommend them due to poor paper management. Also, before I cancelled I could connect at 56k but after the reinstatement I never went beyond 26k.

Mad I gave them one day, and it did not work. I had to defect to Windoze 98 to dial-up. They do not use standard protocols; my Debian GNU/Linux box coould dial-up okay, stay connected at a 1 kps rate. My Mozilla could make no connections.

From Outlook Express 6.0, totalusa.net could not even SEND my small emails. The server rejected them. Then I went to the Outlook, to breakup the emails into smaller pieces, and totalusa.net STILL rejected them! The promo said $3.33, but they charged $9.99!

NOGO!

I tried the 3 month trial. About 15% of days I was unable to connect at all, another 15% I had to use another ISP to start the day but was able to connect later in the day. Not even reliable enough for a backup and too expensive for that. Their cancellation provides for a stop date, but if you send in the cancellation you better have another ISP first as you will be cancelled as soon as the billing department gets the notice.

I have used totalusa for 6 months as a backup and it has been very slow at times but I have always connected. Do not use the email so I cannot comment on that. I did try the web accelerator but it did not work very well either. I am getting ready to try another one though.

I have been trying to use this service for 3 weeks. So far there have been 3 days that I haven't been able to use it (14% of the time). One day busy all day. Two days rejecting userid/password. Hardly reliable enough for a backup and the $7.99 is only with 3 months (who knows what % of the time it will be available), otherwise on month to month it is $9.99, among the most expensive on this site. Only + is the 3 months at $1.99. I'm glad I have another ISP and this was only a trial. Hotdial is the same cost on a monthly basis and I have only had 1 day in 2 years I couldn't use them. Only drawbacks, I hoped this would solve, was the 5 hour disconnect (this one turns out to be 6 hour) and 450 hours ( I am not sure I could get to 450 hours here with the days it is not useable).

Yes.. I tried thier 3 month trial.. but I would never reccommend them. Sloooooooow connection is an understatement, pages time out frequently even to yahoo mail..etc The speed was so slow at times.. it took 3-5 page refreshes to get to mail. Some connection speeds were single digit 3-5k and that was with all 10 access numbers for my area. Best connection was 21k, and I do most of my surfing in the late night hours.
