www.SoCalFree.net . The service is much improved with the new modems on availability. Sometimes, more frequent automatic disconnects. Response speed still relatively slow (supposedly 28,000 bps but actually slower). .......... Server does not always connect to some of the smaller web sites ( i. e. smaller email web sites not supported by an Isp). .......... The grant was much welcomed.

I just found out that they received a new grant and purchased more modems. I haven't received a busy signal since they added the new modems.

This service is becoming useless... If you get on early till about 2pm it will work fine, but after 2pm nothing but busy signals. They updated their equipment some months back so you get better sped now, however since they did NOT update the capacity of the people that can be on the system gets overloaded.
You are better off using Sevenmidgets 30 hours free no busy signals and faster speed, just use the dun dailer.
My dialup dats are over just got DSL $14.95

Great free ISP! Better than when I used NetZero Platinum (avoid NetZero!). Fast connection for dail-up. Uses DUN. Before it wouldn't allow you to go to SSL secured websites, but now you can.
Only downside is that it gets busy alot. Of course, you can only use it in the Southern California area.

Try an alternate dial up access service listing as a back up should one be available. Also, consider several other free ISP providers listed here on Fl as back ups (Juno, Netzero, and PGHConnect among others). SoCalFree.net busy hours are during most evenings on its voice mail service.

Created account. When I tried to connect for the first time, I could only get a busy signal. With the number of free internet providers dwindling, I can imagine lots of folks are turning to socalfree.net. If you need to connect right away, socalfree.net may not be for you.

This service is great to me. Of course it's somewhat slow, it is dial up after all (and the fact that I have a 28 k modem doesn't help). I still miss my DSL service terribly, but for the price (free), this dial up service can't be beat. I've never been charged for it. Only setback is that it's busy a lot sometimes, and with only one access number in my area that kinda ***. Really though, any faults can be overlooked, it's free. Even compared with AOL *which I HATE HATE* it's the better choice. Unlike AOL this isn't bundled with software that crashes your comp, and it's not $20 or whatever a month either. And it's unlimited access with no catch, I love that part. Juno and netzero are ok-ish, but the huge banner at the top and the 10 hr a month limit just don't do it for me. So far so good, I'm having no problems with it.
I've been reading on here about how you can't access secure sites throuth socalfree.net. Not true in my case. Maybe it's because I"m using Mozilla Firefox, but I never have any trouble at all accessing secure servers.
I've also read complaints on no e-mail. What does that matter? Is there something wrong with hotmail or yahoo or g-mail or whatever? Oh, and to the person who said they should have just used aol... it's called checking to see if the number is local. I had AOL loaded on my comp during one of Socals slower periods. It was slower than this free isp.
Anyway, sorry for the rant, but it's insane to see people hating on this *free* service. And if it wasn't free to you, should have checked the number.
Iit isn't the most secure connection (downloads get cut off sometimes) and sometimes it's busy forever, but why would I be stupid enough to complain about something that's free

Socalfree is great. I use it all the time. I can't believe how stupid some of the users on this group are. A local call is a local call. Free is free.
I have been using them for a couple of years and haven't had a single problem. It is a great company, you should read their FAQ. They have dial up numbers through out socal. Just because you give the operator a number on their list that happens to be toll to YOU, doesn't mean that every one of their numbers on the list is toll. Use your brain! Pick a number that is within 12 miles of you and it will be a local call.
Socal upgraded their internet connection. It is really fast now. It is so much faster than my netzero connection.

I went to their website and it don't show. | SoCalFree back up again in southern California (using the web site now). Upgrade to 128 bit web sites recognition seems to be one of several problems on the servers. Possibly SoCalfree servers not to be upgraded as free internet is not their main business (voice mail). Recommend very low cost ISP providers on 128 bit programmed web sites now at $2.95 per month (limited usage) as a companion with www.SoCalFree.net/ . Also, Protel Communications (see FL thread on Protel). Current access to the SoCalFree web site is to whenever those services are available on an intermittent basis.

The service is no longer buggy. This service is for someone that really can't afford an ISP. If you do a lot of surfing especially if you shop or do kazaa, ebay.Don't bother with this one it will drive you crazy. Ebay has change their login protocol it only logs in with SSL now and this service doesn't do SSL most of the time. I have use it for about four months, but I need something that does SSL, FTP, etc.

Is anyone having problems with this ISP? I use two numbers in the 626 area code. The service for the last two week has been very buggy, the pages don't always load up. I've emailed support a tons of times they they have done nothing about the problem not even a reply.
I know its not at my end because when I use any other free ISP I don't have this problem.

Title: Works well for me
|
|
I've used this service since February and haven't had a bit of trouble with it, but, since they had a big list of telephone numbers in my "city," I checked them all to find the four that were really "local" for me. No FTP, but if I need that, I fire up my "Access4Free 10 hrs/month" account.
