Post  Title: Joi Internet

I was with Joi for several years and loved it. Great service, awesome tech support. I opted to stay on as a member when they sold out to Earthlink. It was the same great low price, and I didn't have to use their lousy software to connnect to the internet. But they're service is little to be desired. So I switched to SysMatrix where I was equally as happy as I was with Joi. To answer an earlier post, Joi used Hawk Communications servers.

Post  Title: Which ISP uses JOI's V.92 modems with V.44 compression now?

DBG
Guest
Joi was the best dial up I ever had. Connections 1/3 to twice faster than anybody else I have been with since 1990. I just want to get to the net on a fast dialer connection and use my own email. They gave me all that. When they sold me to Earthlink... connections to every modem they have is slower than dirt. I wouldn't use Earthlink anymore even if for free. They are worst provider I've had in 15 years in everyway.
I don't care what they call themselves, I would just like to connect to the net on the V.92V.44 modems JOI was using. I have found several in Central Alabama that have V.92 modems, but none are using V.44 compression, which makes them effectively much slower, regardless of the connect rate. Does anybody have any idea who's modem JOI was using and which ISP is using those V.92 modems with V.44 compression now? That is where I want to be. Just go to the net via dialer at fastest possible connect and compression. Don't care nor desire any of the other BS. Does anybody know which ISP got or has V.92 V.44 dial up modems in central Alabama? Thanks!

Reading the other comments I have to jump in. I had Joi for several years before getting DSL service. I found it reliable and inexpensive with few problems. I found their tech support to be responsive and knowledgeable. I cancelled a few weeks before they annouonced their demise and received a refund for the rest of the prepaid year.

Post  Title: Joi's OPT OUT (of Earthlink Transfer) Did Not Work!

JustMe
Guest
Well, not too surprisingly, when we went to OPT OUT of Joi Internet's heavyhanded transfer of accounts to Earthlink, the system claimed our account information yielded a "NOT A KNOWN ACCOUNT" response!

Hope their EMAIL cancellations work better than their OPT OUT LINK, so we can just dump these guys who so casually dump their customers who have been loyal and nonproblematic for years...

We're disgusted with the lack of integrity and competence so rampant in these online companies!

Wonder if Joi Internet plans to REMAIN AS AN ONLINE SERVICE PROVIDER? IF SO, THEY WILL HAVE A LOT OF CLEANING UP OF THEIR REPUTATION AFTER THIS TRANSFER TO EARTHLINK DEBACLE...
(And as one who already went through that ordeal a few years ago, believe me, IT *will* be a DEBACLE!)

:-((((

ps At the first indication that Joi Internet *has* provided our information to Earthlink (or anyone else) against our wishes, we will contact appropriate authorities to complain about unethical practices and we urge others to do the same.

Well, Joi stops the dial up... They have a nice deal with Earthlink to continue service, but I opted out and found a cheaper ISP than Earthlink.
I prepaid Joi, $6.95 a month, for a year that is 84 something. Now they stop per May 2005 and guess what? Will not refund me for the remaining months I paid for.
Good riddance, guys!

Post  Title: Disappointed with Joinet...

Have been using joinet for over a year and found it good enough to stick with, since switching ISPs is a pain in the neck. Am disappointed to receive their abrupt notification that they are quitting the ISP business and "have made arrangements to plunk their customers down with Earthlink." Hope their "COUNT ME OUT" weblink truly works, so we can avoid being arbitrarily switched over to Earthlink, whose services we had the MISfortune to use back when they first started. We found them obnoxious, overbearing, demanding, self-righteous, invasive, and generally TOTALLY INCOMPETENT, but in all fairness, maybe that was because they were just getting started and didn't know any better!

As for joinet, their phone support was pretty pathetic. I recall once asking a support tech (I use the term lightly in their case) if they could check something online for me, to see why my system wasn't showing it, and I was shocked when he said "We don't have computers here!" LOL!

Their email support has been TOTALLY NONEXISTENT. Not once has any person or entity ever responded to any emails we've sent to joinet about our account.

Sometimes their email service was just plain flaky... Eventually it seemed to come back and work OK.

All in all, having joinet for our ISP was acceptable, given their reasonable rates and the fact they basically left us alone to do our own thing, which is what we expect from an ISP. To their credit, they NEVER ONCE sent us any spam-mail (advertising) or other cr*p.

Too bad they are bailing out, which means we now have to scour around for a new provider.

On May 20, 2005, Joi Internet will discontinue offering dial-up Internet access. In order to keep you connected, we’ve made a special arrangement with EarthLink, the nation’s next generation Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Mad I've been having problems w/ joi internet off and on for sometime. Usually its emails being bounced or not recieved.. or a dial up number not connecting - this is usually fixed fast.

Today, however, whenever I tried to dial in I was greeted with "username/password invalid". The same name/password that worked hours before was now not working. I waited for an hour.. tried again on multiple numbers and got the same result. I wasn't able to get online for 6 hours.

Got some friends to look up the Joi customer service number (both the toll free and long distance number). I wasn't able to get an answer - for more then 5 hours (maybe longer.. i stopped trying) I got either a busy signal, or a voice answering service that took the call and then hung up on me instead of routing me to tech services or sales.

I am extremly unhappy. Internet goes down from time to time.. but to not even be able to get through to a rep (not even when i tried calling the long distance number). What kind of garbage is that??

Blah.. i'm curious though. Does that cancelation email address actually work. I'm considering canceling when i can find a substitute service and i dont want to send an email.. get a stupid form response and then continue to get charged.

Very unhappy!

Joimail bounces half my emails; has rude, inept technical support and is totally indifferent to improving their product or customer satisfaction.

I'm not sure which ISP to go with, but Joimail is garbage.

Post  Title: MY PROBLEM WITH JOI

babatope

I called jointernet office for enrolment and decided to pay by money order on 2/2003. The company gave me the necessary information where to forward my money order. I bought my money order on 3-18-2003 for $309.60 (this amount was for a separate 2years pre-paid accounts for my son and I). I was called and connected after jointernet had received my money order and the representative told me how to set up my connection, this was almost the end of march. My service actually started on the end of march and my son's service started at the begining of April 2003.
After connection, honestly speaking, I donot have any problem with jointernet service . Though, I donot use its email address cause I have emails with yahoo and excite. I donot go to their website too. I only pre-paid for 2years contract for me and my son for $309.60 (which I sent to them in money order.).
My service suppose to expire on the end of March 2005. Now Jointernet shorten my service by cutting me off on 3-02-2005 which means I lost a whole month of service.
When I called their office, I gave the representative my yahoo email and other information cause he said the company was trying to reach me for long time and that I still own the company about .98cents payment and that was the reason my duration was shorten. I asked him, you cut me off because of .98cent !!!!!. He said ,"yes , and anyway your service is almost to the time of your renew" "" Do you want to sent us money for the renew plus the .98cent""
After alot of lies and denials from this fellow, I told him forget it, I will rather take my lost and go somewhere else where I can get a better customer service and respect with decency. I ended my call with him. I am now searching on the website for new ISP....I dont mind paying the money even pre-paid a 2 years for my son and I ,but I want an honest company that I can rely on.

Now, if you are a member of jointernet and want to disprove this comment do so, my registration number is (phone number removed - don't post personal info on a public forum - J)

Sirs, Tried your internet service and was very unhappy with your service. Took me a very very long time to get to speak with someone, and then had to send in my cancellation, all the while being billed for service I had no use for. The VERY BEST ADVERTISEMENT IS WORD OF
MOUTH. I do wish you people had not billed me the second ((month)) this was and is uncalled for. I am not a happy camper and intend to speak up. I have read off others and their plight, and this is SMELLING BAD. I bielieve you should place GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICE NO
1. I think I am owed for the second month.

Pre-paid signups not using a credit card are sometimes available for a limited duration of service. Disadvantage - usually can not cancel without a termination fee. Juno and Netzero ISP services have such plans as an example.

Post  Title: Distingish between good & bad business...

Jessie
Guest
There may be other companies doing exactly what Joi Internet does to their customers, charging to customer's credit card without any notice. They may not do anything wrong like some people said, but it does not mean that they conduct good business.

In my case, a notice prior to charging customer's card is the way to go. If Joi Internet had done that, no surprise would have been done. Even some people printed out the agreement when they signed it a year ago, who memorize such detail of the agreement? Also, when I prepaid any good or service like phone card, magazine subscription, it logically means that's the what I purchased for that extend of use. Business, like Joi Internet, enables them to take advantage of the situation & benefits to the company's financial gain.

It doesn't take a lot for Joi Internet to simply send out an email before charging their customer than making bad business reputation. After all, isn't their business is based on word of mouth?

You have to read and print out the agreement when you sign up for anything long term. Joi Internet is not the only company to do this. I paid for a year to be able to download from ZD Net. If I do not cancel BEFORE the year is up, they will automatically charge my credit card. I'm not sure but I think Webshots might be the same. It is up to you to cancel BEFORE the period is over. Joi internet did nothing wrong, they followed the terms that you agreed to.

I subscribed & prepaid Joi Internet service by credit card on 12/17/2003 for a year. Without prior notice, Joi Internet charged me another 12-month of service without my acknowledgement or approval on 12/17/2004.

I contacted them on 12/18/2004 and explained that the 12-month subscription was over and I do not intend to renew their service. They cancelled my renewed subscription but refused to give me a full refund.

Regarding to this month's subscription that I DID NOT purchase or use, I've contacted them for numerous times. They said this is all covered under their terms of service – permit Joi Internet to automatically bill my credit/debt card without my approval.

Joi Internet sent me an email notice after my card has been charged, not before. When I contact them, it’s too late to obtain a full refund. Thus, I am forced to pay one month of service that I did not request. This shows extremely poor business practices.

Apparently, Joi Internet’s selling practice is misleading and their contract is deceptive, which leads to previous prepaid subscribers who are unable to get out of the deal unless they pay for an extra month subscription unnecessarily and unreasonably.

Had this service for 15 months and find it to be very unreliable. Guess that may be expected for such inexpensive service. Local server gets crapped up and becomes terribly slow. Have to call and get them to run diagnostics on their equipment. Usually clears up within a few hours of my call. Service techs always want to check or modify my computer. I always tell them that I am just notifying them of problems with their equipment and don't want my equipment diagnosed or "fixed". I wonder how many perfectly fine systems get hosed by this tactic of "let's check your modem settings". Made the mistake of renewing 1 year contract with them after an unusually long stint of good service (1 month or so). Bad move. Last two months have had very poor service. Guess I'll try Netzero.
