I've had Fry's ISP now for 3 months and have never been disconnected. I've remained on line for 5 days straight at times and the only reason I disconnected was to reboot my computer. Although the connection is slow, it's no different than with any other ISP I've had. I guess it's the phone lines that make it slower or faster... some people have a better phone line, some people have a worse one... obviously I'm in an area where it's worse. But the connection is stable, and I haven't had any problems with it. I've had a few other ISP's before, and this is by far the best one yet. Some would boot you off after 8-10 hours no matter what you're doing, even if you're in the middle of a download... others would boot you off if you're idle for too long. I like not having software to install, or anything that bogs down my computer. I like being able to use Incredimail with my Fry's email. I also have not received any SPAM with Fry's email, so that is a major plus. I'm quite happy with Fry's, so until I can get DSL, I'll be sticking with them... that should be in 2007 or so Frown

Post  Title: ok-slow surfing-recent disconnects

Guest

I have been with Frys for about a year now. They get the job done, but I have been looking for a better cheap service or awhile now.

The surfing can be very slow sometimes. Worse than on my old PC.

For about 2 weeks now I have been getting disconnected frequently after being connected for some time. I do a lot of downloading and uploading so this can get frustrating. I am using the free Netero as I type this. Since Frys disconnected me 3 times in 5 monutes. I finally gave up for a bit!

Anyway I am hoping to bail out of there service soon , but that all depends o findin another ISP thats cheap, unlimited and allows FTP, downloads, etc.

Sigh if only to be just a little bit richer!

Post  Title: This is a Good ISP

I signed up for Fry's ISP about two weeks ago (today is Aug. 14), and I am glad to report that this is a good ISP. At first I was bothered by the fact that I often times connected at a slower speed than my previous ISP, but even that seems to have gotten better. There are no mandatory 4-hour or 5-hour or whatever-hour disconnects, just straight online for as long as you want to be connected.

Fry's ISP has web-based email, and that is where I find fault - I can't read my html-based emails! All I see are lines of code, and that could be a problem for some. However, my main email is subscription-paid Yahoo!, so I don't plan on often using my Fry's ISP email.

All in all, I'd recommend Fry's ISP to anyone looking for internet access straight up - no fluff, no extras, no disconnects, or no html email. Wink

About 3 weeks ago I signed up with Frys (www.frys.com) and have been VERY satisfied with their service.

This comes after disappointing service from several of their competitors.

Thanks.

GO FRYS.

I signed up at Fry's five months ago and they are without a doubt the fastest, most stable ISP I've ever used. I can surf for ever and not get bumped off and the throughput is great (I'm only 45 miles from San Jose, guess that helps). Unfortunately I'm at Freedomlist looking for a new ISP since Fry's doesn't support the V.92 standard in California (only Texas). I just purchased a V.92 modem and would like to take advantage of it's features. It's a shame, because they are great in every other respect!

I noticed that too, when I used my laptop''s built-in modem, I always had that particular issue with frys.com. After I got a PCMCIA modem, I stopped having that issue. Odd.

Frys says they cover all of CA, but they still don't cover any cities in Santa Barbara County: Santa Barbara, Lompoc, Santa Maria, etc. They tell me to just keep checking.

I used to use them a lot, but recently I've only been able to connect at about 14.4k - ultra-slow connection speed. Sure I can sit on it all day, but what can I do with it? Half of the IM software out there won't even connect at this molasses-slow speed. I contacted ISP Support about this problem, in case it's reagional (I'm in East Contra Costa County) but so far, no response.

frys.com now has numbers for the entire state of California, though some area codes have far more than others (check their website for specifics)

I first connected to Fry's 11/01. Has been very good, not excellent, until about 2 weeks ago. Always used to connect at about 42 or 43 reliably and disconnections were very rare. Now, I haven't connected over 28.8 for 2 weeks and a lot of dropped connections when using my laptop. Forget customer support...lol. They are hard to get, and when you do you realize that you know more than they do. I'm going to give NikoJet a try.

Post  Title: Service that Works

Fry's User - San Jose
Guest
It is true that when it works it works and when it doesn't it dosen't. For me it takes about 34 seconds to connect.

They claim that they never disconnect but I have gotten disconnected before. It is truly unlimited I have connected for about 429 hours in one month. Usually I connect for 330 hours. The longest time I was connected for was about 2 days before getting disconnected.

For my modem I get connection speeds around 40-45kbps.

Problems: Currently I have no problems with Fry's. In the past I had connect problems, and ISP outage. Most of the problems were involving connect problems. (Unable to connect, etc.) I'm not sure about how busy the network is in San Jose because I stay connected all day long. I got a auto-redial program so when ever it disconnects it would log back on for me.

Coverage: All of California, but I use the San Jose number.

Support: E-mail and phone but phone is local only to people living in 408 area code.

Post  Title: Number change

Jei
Guest
They recently changed all of their dialup numbers, putting next to none in the 510 area code (4), putting a ton on the Peninsula (650, 415). They now offer access in the 831 area code.

The new dialup server I have to deal with is finicky, usually connects at 41k, and regularly just hangs there for no apparent reason. This is a major change from the reliable 45k, never-say-drop connection I started with.

Post  Title: Fry''s Good When It Works

Jei

They aren''t kidding when they say unmetered. No
boots, just steady signal. I have had problems with the
server not seeming to answer the call lately, however,
and this even happened mid-session. I''ve tried dialing
into the POPs on my side of the SF Bay (510,925), with
no result, just nothing. Is it due to the server being
slow to pick up? I really don''t know.

Post  Title: Fry''s ***, I''m afraid

Mike Cunningham

I''ve used Fry''s dial-in numbers in the Oakland area and
always connect around 46, but 50% of the time the
connection will never send data, 25% of the time it
sends for a few minutes and then stops, and the
remaining 25% of the time it works but is just dog
slow. I''ve still got two months left of my free 3 month
trial, but you couldn''t pay me to keep using Frys. Oh
yeah, I emailed several times to look for help with the
speed (or lack thereof) and never received a reply.

I''ve had Fry''s ISP for 2 weeks and have been able
to connect only twice out of 30 times. Get busy
629 and 650 error messages. Will try for another
week and drop them. -- Don
