It simply means we use the same network as Mailaka. There are many ISPs who use the same network.

you said, "I'm running WIN98SE on Dell w/ 128MB of RAM at 600MHz, so "
LOL I do my email on a compaq deskpro 386 with 4 megs of RAM 20 mHz, DOS 6.22 and it does a great job and is plenty fast. Chances of picking up a windoze virus?????

Title: web runner
|
|
houstonian Guest
I'm pretty sure that when dial-up ISP's offer a scheme to *speed up* your connection what the software does is simply compress, much like a zip file - the text data on a HTML web page. Graphics such as jpg files won't be sped up at all since they are already fully compressed. I don't know if it's really worth it just compressing the text - but it seems as though something is being lost in the compression process with your yahoo email pages.
Yahoo mail, for a fee, will let you use a pop3 email client such as outlook express, foxmail, or pegasus windoze programs, or linux pop3 clients such as KMAIL which is bundled with KDE desktop for your yahoo email.
Instead of using a web browser to do your yahoo mail with, I think you'd be much happier retrieving, replying, and composing your email with a pop3 client. You should try it anyway with your mailaka email address since you are paying for it anyway, if you like the way it looks and feels over using a web browser, which I'm sure you will, then you can also set it up for your yahoo email.
heck, now that you are using a real ISP, you might as well use real email. Setting up pop3 mail is not that hard, I imagine the mailaka setup software will probably setup your OutLook express program for you. I don't like Outlook Express because it is often targeted by *hackers* but as long as you keep up with your windoze security *updates* you'll probably be alright. I think the best all around pop3 email program is FoxMail, and it's totally free.
Hope these suggestions help.

Title: Web runner

Disappointed Guest
Indeed, I also had similar problems when using Web runner. Although the statistics shows improved speed, but I really cannot see it that anything is faster. I also had some programs which did not like the use of Web runner, such as one telnet program.

Title: Platinum service: looking for comments
|
|
SLW from Tampa Guest
Signed up for Mailaka a few weeks ago after several years of AT&T. In general I have been pleased: easy set-up, decent documentation, responsivness to my e-mails for support.
I am trying the Platinum service, but I'm not warm-n-fuzzy with WebRunner. Seems like it might speed things up some, but I'm not sure.
But I do seem to be experiencing quite a bit of flakiness and I wonder if it's because of WebRunner.
Example: I have used Yahoo mail for personal e-mail for many years and don't want to change that....but since I started using WebRunner my Yahoo mail has caused me problems. Open a mail folder and Explorer becomes 'non responive' and I have to End Task and close IE. Other times the folder will open, but when I attempt to launch a message I experience the same behavior and I have to End Task.
Sometimes going to Internet Options and deleting temp files will rectify this, but only for a little while.
Thoughts? Is this related to WebRunner? I'm running WIN98SE on Dell w/ 128MB of RAM at 600MHz, so this isn't a hot rod, but I'm only surfing and e-mailing so wouldn't think that horsepower or OS would be the issue.

Why, thank ya kindly mr/ms *mp*
As for the $5.95 price, that's what I signed up for and I'm about to send in my Decembers payment, no one has notified me of any changes so I will send them a payment of $5.95
Since I'm here, I'll give a brief report. They seemed to have worked out whatever was causing the disconnects for the most part, it is much better than it was a couple of weeks ago, so at this point in time I give em a 'thumbs up', things are running pretty smoothly with only occaisonal disconnects, and I am realistic in my expextations knowing there is no such thing as 'perfection'.

Title: problems
|
|
houstonian Guest
well, I'm sure you read some of my posts I left during the death spiral of access4cheap, which I had for about a year. but we won't go there.....
my phone lines are good, in fact, about a year and half ago they just replaced the wires going from the telephone poles to all the houses in the neighborhood and replaced the old 1960's style carbon gapped lightning arrestors with brand new disconnect junction boxes.
I use several computers and different OS's throughout the house to connect to the internet.
Bottom line, I think I'm a pretty good judge of when I'm getting good service or crappy service.

Title: possible reason
|
|
houstonian Guest
You probably picked up a KLEZ worm or one of it's variants, if this is the case, these have their own SMTP email sending components and will send itself out to everybody in your windoze address book without your knowledge.
Let me guess, you are using windoze with LookOut Express, oooops, I mean OutLook express????
Go get, or update your antivirus software and get your shots.
Here's a little trick you can use to protect yourself in the future, in your address book, you should make a fake address of somelthing like " " and for the name put "virus detected!"
That way, if one of those worms / virii attempts to send emails to the addresses in your addressbook, this is the first address it will encounter, and the next time you check your mail you will get a message bounced back because the message was undeliverable. Since it will say the message was to you will recognize that it was sent from YOUR comptuter!!!!!

Title: any Kamudi affiliation with Mailaka?
|
|
Kamudi User Guest
I am currently using, trying to use is more accurate, Kamudi and am looking to switch.
Kamudi and Mailaka have the same access numbers here in my area. Does that mean they are somehow connected? The Kamudi service is terrible and I certainly do not want to switch to something they are even remotely affiliated with.
Any help is appreciated.

Title: timeouts
|
|
Rich Guest
Got that, just wanted to know how long their timeouts lasted. I didn't want to wait an hour to dial back in. My problem is with them hiding which networks are limited (100 hrs/month? 150 hrs/month?) and which are not. Personally, I could live with 300 hrs/month, probably even 150/ month if there were no other access numbers available. But I'd like the 300 if it's available, and they won't tell which numbers are associated with that.

Didn't you have problems with other isp services? I remember seeing your posts with problems with many providers. Maybe it is at your computer or phone lines.

Title: use policy
|
|
Rich Guest
I contacted mailaka regarding how soon one can reconnect after the 3 hr time out. They got back quickly to say I could reconnect after a 1 minute wait. I emailed them about a phrase in their use policies: "User understands that some networks offered are limited" and how I could know which access number goes with which network. No answer. I emailed them again. No answer again. I guess you don't know if you are connecting onto a limited network until they cut you off.

BTW, I would like thank this site and others who''d posted their feedback here. This site(and whoever maintains it) and users here provide a lot of information which otherwise would be impossible to find out. It definitely helped me finding a good ISP for the price I was willing to pay. Once again thanks a lot to everyone.

mp,
A coule of days ago I left my connection on with out my knowledge for about 2 hours. But it never got disconnected. So I'm doubting your client configuration for idle timeout rather than their server forcing you to timeout.

Title: Mailaka Internet Feedback
|
|
milli Guest
I switched from AT&T worldnet dialup to Mailaka dialup a couple of weeks ago. Here is my feedback:
* Enrollment: Everything done online and received the new membership mail with in a hour or so with complete instructions
* Configuration: I use DUN so I picked up a couple of local access numbers and configured my dial up connection in a jiffy
* Connection & reliabilty: The connection speed ranges from 44k to 46K which is same or more than what I was getting with AT&T. I'm not a power user. So far I never got disconnected('cause I was never online for more than 3 hrs may be) or got busy signal while connecting.
* Customer Service: Never had to chance to contact their customer service so can't comment on it.
I will have to say I'm more than satisfied with their service for $6.95. I have tried Fry's dialup but I never got more than 33k speed(the same line I used for AT&T and now using for Mailaka). I contacted their CS but never received any response or help.

Connection speed is normally dependant on your local phone company and the quality of your phone lines to the central office.
