Post  Title: Re: tech support (USFamily)

While they have happy customers, my own experience with USFamily.net is ugly.

After sending out an e-mail to several friends updating my contact information, I received a nasty diatriabe about the ills of Google. Apparently, their leadership has bigtime issues with Google, and decided to let the world know.

As a new GMail user, USFamily, in other terms, said I was an idiot for using Google. Say what?

I checked out their website, and the rules of use. Anyone who needs to use e-mail to find a job is shot befor they start, for example, considering how attachments are handled. One friend can't even get alumni e-mail from the Christian college she went to.

It looks to me like a small-time operation charging no better than the current market rate for mediocre e-mail services. If spam is the big concern, there are others which specialize it this. Or, as I have done, get one address for receiving newsletters and what-not, and one only for those close to me.

As it stands, cheaper ISP exists, and while I can't speak to the quality of service, I would look elsewhere, and find a more professional company which upholds high standards for service.

Just wanted to clarify some things.

I've been using USFamily for 6-1/2 years. Even though support has 'hours of operation' posted, if a problem has involved my ability to use their service I've always received a personally written e-mail response within hours, including late Saturday nights.

I found this page during my search for a page I saw last month about USFamily's spam filter. I receive no spam when I leave their filter turned on, and I've never had more than one desired e-mail pulled by their filter during a rolling 30 day period. The ones they have pulled as spam are opt-out newsletters I had requested that are heavy on advertising, and would be spam to most people.

Definitely worth a look.

Post  Title: very good for light users

I have used usfamily net for over 4 years now and gennerally been very happy. I am using the net much more now and subject to disconnects much more frequently due to their priority based system ( extra 40hrs not enough ) so I am currently looking for another ISP that will allow my near 24/7 useage. I did for a short time have some disconnet problems un-related to priority as described in 2 of the reviews I have read, however tech-support walked me through nessary changes and have had no further problem.. except that I am on way to much these days. One great bennifit I found is no spam. We have 3 email accounts and never have gotten unsolictated email... never. My husband has one email and I have 2, one I use for registering at sites such as Ancestry, e-bay, and yes their ads come in as stated in sign up .. but never anything else. I have also used Earthlink and MSN and inspite of blocker I have recived alot of junk mailing mostly porn. Both companys tried to tell me that it was from signing up at websites... posh!! as I stated I use a seperate email address for those and before I even give my address with them out to anyone I get porn offers. Id love to find an ISP with the simplicty and security of USFamily and 24/7 advaibility of the Big Name ISP's. In short I strongly recommend USFamily if your usage is under 100 hrs per month.

I forgot to mention, as a pro, that you don''t *need* their software, which is just a customized Microsoft dialer product anyway. You can set up the account in the standard dial-up networking that''s included in windows.

Also, no banners and no ads.

On more: they do now offer web-mail access, it''s nothing special, but it''s good for occasional remote access.

I forgot a con too: on the 8.99 plan only, all your outgoing e-mails have a one line USFamily \"tag-line\" appended to it. You can turn that off on all their other plans.

All in all, I think they''re running a nice, straight little ISP here with a motive for quality, not just profit.

They talk a good game, and they've got a good game, if you don't mind their priority system (I've been kicked once, so I upgraded to their 15.99/mo plan that deletes 40 hours from your priority and haven't been kicked again yet). It seems to me that if your priority is under 100, you probably won't be kicked very often, if at all, despite their warnings.

They happen to own their own dial-up pool (instead of out-sourcing, like most others), so I suppose it might be possible that their equipment might be a little sensitive to off-brand modems. I have a USRobotics v.90 "hardware" modem (not a win-modem). I connect to both of their local pools at 50.6K every time from my 85 year old apartment building. Their 651 area code pool does seem more reliable lately.

Pros: easily as fast as, if not faster than, AT&T Worldnet and Earthlink on their local "priority" modem pools. I haven't tried any of their other dial-up options;
Cheap 8.99 plan for light users;
They only bill you every 6 months;
Several choices of e-mail domains;
11.99 and 15.99 get 2 and 5 e-mail addresses included, respectively;
11.99 and 15.99 plans get a nice, fast news feed that includes fairly decent binary completion rates (of course, retention leaves something to be desired, and if you like to DL binaries, you'll kill your priority in a hurry);
30 day free trial really means the first 30 days are free. They don't charge your credit card until 30 days have passed, at which time you pay for the *next* 6 months, *not* the previous month;
They support Macs, as well as PCs, so Mac users and "Bi" users should consider them as well.

Cons: no news feed access on 8.99 plan;
$15 set-up fee billed on the first 6 months (that's somewhat negated by the first 30 days free though);
No tech support at night or on the weekends (I don't blame them, I'd rather be sleeping at night and out fishing on the weekend, too);
You pay extra service fees for monthly billing, or if you'd rather mail them a check (I want as few monthly bills as possible so 6-month billing is a blessing as far as I'm concerned);
Apparently, you can't use off-brand modems or their equipment will diss you! (Not that I've had a problem with my USR.)

Bottom line: If you work around the quirks and cons, and you're not a 24/7 kind of user, this ISP is a tops for dial-up speed.

Had them for a short for free trial. Got rid of them about as fast as I signed up. Tech was rude, said my modem was sick which was why I kept getting disconnected every two minutes. Signed up with another ISP. No problems. Guess my modem was fine, huh? Stay away. Lousy tech support, immediate disconnects, even for this price it is no bargain.

They talk a good game. If you have an access problem, on a weekend they are out fishing or simething. Any Problems, oh it's your motem, or your system isn't compatible with their
software.
I've all I could to use their sevice. Between, no answers and modem problems( ofcourse it's my fault) nothing but a pain.
